Tasha Butts was an American basketball player and the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas women’s basketball team.
Sadly, the coach passed away at the young age of 41 after battling with breast cancer for two years.
Butts attended Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, Georgia, where she was named the state’s girls basketball player of the year in 2000.
Later, she enrolled at the University of Tennessee to play college basketball for the Tennessee Volunteers women’s basketball team.
The Minnesota Lynx of the Women’s National Basketball Association had selected Tasha with the 20th overall selection in the 2004 WNBA draft. She received various contracts from other WNBA teams during her college years.
After graduation, she returned to Tennessee in 2005 as a graduate assistant. Talking about her coaching career, Tasha worked as an assistant coach at Duquesne University.
Then, the coach joined the University of California in 2008. Later, in 2011, she coached at Louisiana State University till 2019.
After being the assistant coach of Georgia Tech, she was named the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas women’s basketball team in April 2023.

Since her body was getting weaker, the coach had decided to step away from coaching Georgetown last month.
Moreover, the diagnosis inspired her to initiate the Tasha Tough campaign, which has brought awareness and raised money to bring quality care to women who can’t afford it through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
On 22 October 2023, Butts took her last breath and passed away at the age of 41.
In an interview with ESPN, Georgia Tech coach Nell Fortner said, “The news of Tasha’s passing is incredibly sad…What she did as a member of this coaching staff cannot be undervalued.”
Similarly, Georgetown president John J. DeGioia said, “Tasha was a person of character, determination, vision, and kindness. She will be deeply missed by our community and by so many people around the country who have been inspired by her life. We offer her family our most sincere condolences.”
According to the Georgetown University Athletics website, Tasha is survived by her parents, Spencer Sr. and Evelyn, brother Spencer Jr. and nephew Marquis.
