AJ Russell was selected 52nd overall by the Texas Rangers due to his elite fastball metrics, strong college performance, and high-upside potential despite recent injury recovery.
A.J. Russell, the full name Andrew James Russell, is a talented 21-year-old right-handed pitcher from Franklin, Tennessee.
Recently, he signed with the Texas Rangers after being selected 52nd overall in the 2025 MLB Draft.
A standout at Franklin High School, Russell posted a stellar 1.14 ERA and 94 strikeouts in his senior year before heading to the University of Tennessee.
There, he made an immediate impact but faced a setback in spring 2024 when he underwent Tommy John surgery.
After months of rehab, he returned in 2025 to make six starts, tallying 36 strikeouts over 25.1 innings.
Despite limited action, scouts remained high on his potential due to his strong command, strikeout ability, and poise on the mound.
AJ Russell Was Selected 52nd Overall In The 2025 Draft!
A.J. Russell officially signed with the Texas Rangers on July 23, 2025, agreeing to a $2.6 million signing bonus.
That bonus was well above the MLB’s recommended slot value for his draft position.
As per the report, Major League Baseball assigns a slot value to each pick in the draft as a guideline for teams’ signing bonuses. For the 52nd overall pick in 2025, that slot value was $1,846,700.

By offering roughly $750 K above slot, the Rangers effectively matched compensation typical of early first-round selections.
This demonstrated how highly they regard his potential, fastball arsenal, and recovery progress from elbow surgery.

One of the fans expressed optimism regarding the recent over-slot draft selection, saying:
I don’t know much about him, but if he stays healthy and grooves through the farm system and is ready for the big show,I hope he can help the Texas Rangers win more games…
Russell is expected to join the Rangers’ minor league system soon, where he’ll continue his development.
He’ll be closely monitored, especially given his recent return from surgery.
