The Chadwick School community is mourning the tragic death of Jeffrey Mercer, a respected educator and longtime Director of the Middle School.

His passing has left a profound void among students, colleagues, and friends who admired his warmth, dedication, and leadership.

For more than two decades, Mercer played a vital role in shaping the culture of Chadwick School.

He served as Director of the Middle School since 2013 and briefly held the position of Interim Head of School from 2018 to 2019.

His commitment to education and student growth extended far beyond the classroom, influencing generations of learners both in Palos Verdes, California, and abroad.

Before returning to Chadwick School, Mercer made an international impact as the Headmaster of Chadwick International School in Songdo, South Korea, from 2011 to 2013.

His leadership helped strengthen the connection between the California and Korea campuses, fostering a global spirit of learning and collaboration.

Mercer’s educational background reflected his lifelong passion for history and mentorship.

He earned his MAT in History from Duke University and completed his undergraduate studies in social and cultural history at the University of California, Berkeley.

The news of his passing has deeply affected those who knew him personally and professionally.

One colleague shared a heartfelt tribute, writing,

“Jeff was one of the first people I met at Chadwick School. He actually was on the hiring committee and interviewed me for the job. He made an incredible impact in Korea and California, to name a few. I can’t speak to all of his accomplishments because they are infinite. All I can do is use art as a tool to reflect and express gratitude to a man who has impacted many generations. Gone too soon.”

As students, staff, and alumni come together to honor Jeffrey Mercer’s memory, they remember him not only as an outstanding educator but also as a compassionate mentor and visionary leader.
