The Mysterious Life of Anthony McClelland and His Absence from NBA Legend LeBron James’s Life Amid Rumors of His Survival and Troubling Past

Whether Anthony is out there watching from afar or not, his shadow has undeniably shaped one of basketball's legends.

LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, has intrigued fans for years with the mystery surrounding his father, Anthony McClelland.

Born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio, LeBron was raised by his mother, Gloria Marie James, who was just 16 at the time.

Anthony McClelland, also a teenager at the time, had a brief relationship with Gloria in the early 1980s, but he vanished from the picture soon after LeBron’s birth.

Today, there is no official news of his passing, and his whereabouts are largely unknown.

He was born in the 1960s in Ohio, of African American descent. His life has been marked by trouble with the law, including an extensive criminal record for crimes like arson and theft.

Reports suggest he spent much of his adult life in and out of prison, which kept him far from any role in LeBron’s upbringing.

Gloria raised LeBron as a single mother, facing hardships in Akron’s tough neighborhoods, but she provided the stability and love that helped shape him into the man he is today.

Anthony, on the other hand, showed little interest in fatherhood and drifted away early on.

Over the years, Rumors and Theories have swirled about Anthony’s True Identity and What Happened to him

One widespread speculation ties him to Roland Bivens, a star basketball player at the same high school Gloria attended in the early 1980s.

Some believe Anthony and Roland are the same person, pointing to similarities in their stories.

Roland had a play style eerily similar to LeBron’s, and side-by-side photos of Roland in high school and young LeBron show striking resemblances.

Friends recall Roland and Gloria spending time together and even briefly dating.

The theory suggests that Roland changed his name to Anthony McClelland after facing legal troubles, possibly to evade authorities following charges of arson and theft, which were also linked to Anthony.

But here’s where it gets confusing and deep. Roland Bivens reportedly died in a drive-by shooting in 1994, when LeBron was just eight years old and not yet famous.

If they were the same man, how could Anthony McClelland have been arrested in 2002 for similar crimes, such as arson and theft, if he was not the same man?

That same year, before his arrest, someone claiming to be LeBron’s father allegedly tried to contact him.

This timeline clash has led some to question if Roland was just a lookalike who dated Gloria, or if the name-change story holds water.

Adding to the intrigue, Gloria has publicly named Anthony McClelland as the father, but pictures searched online for Anthony often pull up images of Roland, fueling the confusion.

Another layer comes from NBA player Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest).

In an interview, he mentioned that his brother was in jail with LeBron’s father, saying,

“My brother was in jail with LeBron’s father. My brother spent 10 years in jail, they were locked up together.”

While there’s no direct confirmation that Metta’s brother Daniel was incarcerated, a Newsday article highlights Daniel’s troubled high school years, bouncing between four schools, which hints at a rocky path that could align with prison time.

This anecdote suggests Anthony was alive and in the system well into the 2000s.

Then there’s a detailed Reddit theory that challenges the Roland connection.

Lebron’s real real dad

A user pointed out that Google often lists Anthony McClelland as the father, but describes him as 5’6″ tall and looking nothing like LeBron.

The famous black-and-white photo circulating online isn’t of Anthony or Roland, they argue; it’s actually of Bryant Grant, another player from the yearbook.

Due to a mix-up in reading the rows (where the top row is listed as row one, with Bryant at the end wearing number 24), people have confused the identities.

Roland, listed as number 32 and kneeling, was approximately 6’3″ tall, which was enough to father a 6’9″ son like LeBron, but still a bit short.

Bryant, a senior and a year older, might have been even taller at 6’4″ or 6’5″.

The user speculates that Bryant could be the real father, especially since he was 19 or 20 when Gloria was 15 or 16, which might explain her reluctance to confirm due to potential statutory issues.

They urge people to stop confusing Bryant and Roland based on common yearbook logic, where shorter players are often depicted kneeling.

Despite all these theories, LeBron has turned his father’s absence into a source of strength.

He was raised without Anthony’s involvement and has spoken openly about it. In a 2014 open letter, LeBron wrote,

“Like, Wow, Dad, you know what, I don’t know you, I have no idea who you are, but because of you is part of the reason who I am today. The fuel that I use – you not being there – it’s part of the reason I grew up to become who I am. It’s part of the reason why I want to be hands-on with my endeavors… So me in a position allowing people around me to grow, that maybe wouldn’t have happened if I had two parents, two sisters, a dog, and a picket fence, you know?”

LeBron credits this void for his drive to succeed and his commitment to being a present father to his own children, Bronny, Bryce, and Zhuri.

He’s often said he doesn’t know Anthony personally but thanks him indirectly for the motivation his absence provided.

As for Anthony McClelland’s current status, there’s no official news of his death.

Recent searches and articles up to 2025, including Wikipedia and biographies, describe him as having a criminal past but make no mention of his passing away.

His Low-Profile Life means he Never Stepped into the Spotlight, Even as LeBron Rose to Fame

Some reports note attempts to reconnect in the early 2000s, but there have been no further developments since then.

Without concrete evidence like an obituary or public record of death, it’s reasonable to assume he’s still alive, perhaps living quietly somewhere in Ohio or elsewhere, away from the media glare.

However, his exact whereabouts remain a mystery, much like parts of his story.

Ultimately, Anthony McClelland’s life contrasts sharply with that of his son.

While LeBron built an empire through hard work and a focus on family, Anthony’s path was marked by absence and legal troubles.

The rumors from name changes to hidden identities add drama, but they don’t change the fact that LeBron thrived without him.

Whether Anthony is out there watching from afar or not, his shadow has undeniably shaped one of basketball’s legends.

If new details emerge, they might finally answer the lingering question, but for now, the mystery endures.
