The Skateboarder Community Is Mourning The Loss Of Elias Kim Who Died In A Car Accident

The sudden death of 16-year-old Elias Kim on Thursday night has left his family, friends, and artistic community in profound grief.

Elias tragically lost his life in a car accident while driving alone on Lake Shore Drive.

Authorities reported that he was driving at a high speed without wearing a seatbelt, resulting in fatal injuries.

Elias’s father, Jim Kim, shared a heartfelt tribute to his son, remembering both his talents and his determined spirit.

“This kid had taste, impeccable taste,” Jim wrote.

“He really had an eye for design and beauty. He immersed himself in photography over the past few years, and we were excited to see where his artistic sensibilities would take him.”

Beyond his creativity, Elias demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to his passions. Jim recalled,

“One summer he decided he wanted to be a soccer player, and he practiced every day until he became exceptionally skilled. Later, he wanted to learn boxing, and he trained week after week. Eventually, he discovered skateboarding, where he found his community and people who shared his energy.”

Elias’s friends and collaborators also expressed their heartbreak. Kambua Chema, who worked with Elias on the Co-Gen photography project, posted on social media:

“I’m heartbroken and feel so blessed that our lives got to cross, even for a brief moment. You were destined for greatness, and I was so sure I would get to see you do amazing things. Every moment I captured of you was special. The world has lost a truly wonderful human.”
