The former New York Mets third baseman Bobby Bonilla and his first wife, Millie Bonilla, separated on bad terms in 2009. Bonilla is currently married to Christina Solomon-Bonilla, with whom he shares a child.
The former MLB player’s name came into the limelight last year after Shohei Ohtani penned a 10-year, $700 million contract.
The reason is that both of them had an unusual MLB contract. Ohtani will make $2 million every year until 2034 and then $68 million annually for the next 10 years.
Earlier this year, on July 1, 2024, Bonilla collected a check for $1.2 million from the Mets.
In 2000, the Mets signed Bonilla to a $5.9 million contract and agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest.
Bonilla began his MLB journey with the White Sox in 1986. In his 15 seasons, Bonilla played for eight franchises, with his last season coming in 2001 with the Cardinals.
In his 15-year career, Bonilla won one World Championship ring with the Marlins and went on to win three Silver Slugger Awards.
Bobby Bonilla’s Former Wife, Millie Bonilla, Accused Him Of Hiding His Assets
Bobby Bonilla and his former wife, Migdalia “Millie” Bonilla, were a star couple in the 1990s.
Millie and Bobby met during their high school years. After Bobby had become an established MLB star in 1992, the couple decided to give back to their high schools.
A 1992 article from The New York Times mentions that the former MLB player established the Bobby and Millie Bonilla Public School Fund to benefit three schools.
Bonnila attended one of the schools, and his ex-wife attended the other. Bonilla said he would contribute $500 to the fund for every run he bats in for the Mets (his then-current team).
But in 2009, the couple announced their divorce, ending their 23-year relationship.
A year after filing for divorce from Bobby, Millie accused him of moving around his money and hiding his accounts and holdings from her.
In a 2010 interview with The New York Post, Millie said,
The judge who presided over the divorce ordered Millie to get all the marital properties and 50% of the salary Bobby would start getting in 2011 from the Mets.
At the time, Bobby’s assets included a $3 million apartment in Manhattan, a $2 million home in Connecticut, and an $850,000 place in Florida. He also had a career earning of $50 million.
When Millie filed for divorce, Bobby only showed $18 million in assets. During their court showdown, Bobby claimed that Millie suffered from an unspecified mental illness.
During their 23 years of marriage, Millie and Bobby had parented two kids, Brandon and Danielle.
Bobby And His Second Wife Christina Solomon-Bonilla Reside In Florida
After his not-so-quiet divorce from his first wife, Bobby Bonilla is now happily married to Christina Solomon-Bonilla.
The couple currently reside in Sarasota, Florida, and are well known in the community.
On July 1, 2023, Bobby attended an event in Sarasota due to the persistence of his wife.
During the event, Bonilla walked up and down the bar and also went behind the bar to hand out a few beers.
In an interview with Your Observer, Bonilla said,
Bobby and Christina share a son named Roman, who seems to be from Christina’s previous marriage.
In the same interview, Bobby mentioned that the father-son duo share the same love for golf.
The former MLB player also mentioned his son had won the 2022 Underrated Golf Curry Cup.
He added that Roman is doing the necessary work to make his golf potential into a full-fledged golf career.
