Torey Krug | Powerplay
It is no mystery that Torey Krug is one of the most powerful players in the league on the powerplay.
As per Evolving Hockey, Krug’s 11.2 powerplay scores above replacement are second amongst defensemen over the last three terms.
In other terms, the value that Krug brings on the man position is not easily displaced. But we already know that. So the real mystery is, how does he do it?
At the time, every NHL team runs the 1-3-1 powerplay in some terms.
The Bruins are not distinct. Torey Krug is the “point man” on the Bruins’ leading powerplay unit. What makes Torey Krug so the sole is his activation on his off-wing.
There are two separate benefits of beginning down the right side. The prime benefit is that Krug will have a more lenient time taking one-timers.
Krug caught 6.85 one-timers per 60 minutes at 5v4 last period, good for third on the Bruins and first among left-handed Bruins.
Krug’s goal-scoring isn’t the most relevant asset he brings to the Bruins’ powerplay, but he is a slightly more active shooter than other similar players.
Of the 100 defensemen who’ve played 150 minutes at 5v4 over the last 3 seasons, Krug ranks 22nd in goals per hour despite placing 35th in shot attempts per hour.
The other gain of activating down the right side is that it can form passing lanes.
A basic shot assist is the last pass built before a shot.
Torey Krug had 96 of them at 5v4 over the course of the 2018-19 season, second on the team behind Marchand. Of those, 10 crossed the royal road from the right side.
Torey Krug | Wife, Children and Personal Life
Krug is a married man. He tied knots with his college girlfriend, Melanie Flood, on July 5, 2013. Melanie remembers, “Torey took me to the amusement park in New York on my birthday and proposed to me. There was no chance to neglect him.”
The couple is delighted. There are no rumors about their separation or extra-marital affairs. Recently, in 2019, the couple was blessed with a baby girl, Saylor.

Sadly, Krug did not get much time to spend with his daughter, so Melanie took her into his game. Seeing her in court, he said, “That was special to me. I’ve been jealous of my teammates for a long time now that they get to go over and say hi to their kids during warm-ups.”

Furthermore, Torey has a lovely dog, which he loves very much. Krug keeps him as if he is his child. Also, Torey has an interest in fishing. So, during holidays, he grabs up his backpack and travels to the ocean.
Salary and Net Worth
In 2016, the Boston Bruins signed Torey for $21 million. Later, St. Louis Blues, in 2020, signed Torey in a whopping $45.5 million for seven years.
Moreover, he easily earns more money than any other defenseman in the NHL. Krug is one of the highest-paid defensemen in the NHL.
Hence, after calculating his total sum, Torey’s net worth counts $27.6 million.
Also, Torey sells his merchandise named TK47. And does advertisements for multinational brands. He is endorsed by Ispot television. Through advertisements, he also collects fair money.
Krug ranks 5th among defensemen who’ve played 150 5v4 minutes over the last three seasons in primary assists per hour. His mobility and awareness allow him to create dangerous shots and passes, leading to goals.
Torey Krug | Even Strength
At even strength, especially 5v5, Krug uses his skill set quite separately from the human resources.
Sooner than using his flow and creativity to create high-quality prospects, at 5v5, Krug becomes a transitional, puck-moving defenseman who is a volume shooter.
Krug is a lot more stuck to the point than anyone could anticipate out of a defenseman of his caliber.
A good approach for this is the portion of the time he redistributes the puck after accepting a pass at the point.
Of the top seven Bruins defensemen in time on ice this season, they collectively pass the puck after getting a pass at the point 25% of the time.
Krug is somewhat below average at 22%. However, correlate that to McAvoy, who redistributed the puck 42% of the time, and the picture becomes more obvious.
This certainly added to McAvoy having a 9.7% on-ice shooting rate while Krug sat at 7.6%.
Torey Krug is apparently the best Bruins defenseman for exiting the defensive zone and opening the attacking zone.
