Buck Baker was a prominent American stock car racer born on March 4, 1919, in Richburg, South Carolina.

He had a distinguished NASCAR career from 1949 to 1976, earning two Grand National Series championships in 1956 and 1957.

He also won the prestigious Southern 500 three times and was a prolific driver, with 46 wins and 45 pole positions in his NASCAR Cup Series career.

Baker’s success extended beyond the track, as he was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame‘s 2013 class.

He was also recognized as one of the 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998. After retiring, he established the Buck Baker Racing School, where notable drivers like Jeff Gordon got their start.

Baker passed away on April 14, 2002, of natural causes in the Carolinas Medical Center. Regardless of his physical absence, he left a lasting legacy in the sport.
