Western Illinois University Student Athlete Nico Lamb Passes Away Suddenly At Age 20

The Western Illinois University community is mourning the loss of Nico Lamb, a junior student with a bright future, who passed away on February 17, 2025, around 11 a.m.

Nico was born on April 20, 2004, and raised in Macomb, Illinois, by his parents, Mr. Lamb and Mar (Marlene) Ross.

He grew up in a loving and supportive environment, developing a passion for knowledge and a gift for connecting with others.

Nico’s energy and charm drew people to him from a young age. His infectious passion for life made him a beloved figure among his peers.

Nico’s desire to study and ability to create strong relationships were seen throughout his life.

He completed his high school education at Echo Glenbard East High School, where he actively participated in various extracurricular activities.

He served as the Clubs and Activities Editor, showcasing his organizational skills and dedication to his school community.

Nico also participated in the Junior varsity tennis team, orchestra, and Boy Scouts, proving his diverse interests and dedication to personal growth.

As a Den Chief, he worked with elementary cub scouts, preparing for his Eagle Scout ranking.

Additionally, during his high school years, Nico actively participated in fundraising events, such as the 2018 annual Mattress Sale, where he shared his experience through his writing.

His involvement in such events highlighted his willingness to contribute to his community and support meaningful causes.

Nico graduated from high school in 2022 and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in August of the same year, the turning point in his scouting career.

Nico’s dream was to become a history teacher. He was motivated by his passion for the subject and his desire to inspire future generations.

In pursuit of his dream, he attended Western Illinois University.

In February, he and his fellow students attended Model Illinois, a History/Political Science student event held in Springfield, Illinois.

Nico Lamb was expected to graduate in 2026.

Just months before his sudden passing, Nico was elected Vice President of Theta Chi, a position that showed his fraternity brothers’ respect and admiration for him.

Theta Chi described Nico as “a true leader, a loyal friend, and a light in every room he entered.” The fraternity officially announced Nico’s death, stating,

“His kindness, dedication, and infectious spirit touched countless lives, and his absence leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled. Nico lived a life of service and was kind to everyone. Nico was loved and will be missed greatly.
Rest in peace Nico we know you’re watching out for us all. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers as they navigate through this heartbreaking time. “

Boy Scout Troop 199, Villa Park, IL, also shared a statement regarding Nico’s passing, revealing that it was due to an unforeseen medical complication.

They further added,

“Even in passing, Nico continued his legacy of selflessness. He was an organ donor, giving the ultimate gift of life to others. His generosity knew no bounds, and his spirit will live on in the memories of those who loved him and the lives he has saved.
The world is undoubtedly a better place because Nico was in it, and though he is gone far too soon, his kindness, leadership, generosity, and friendship will never be forgotten. 🦅’

Following the news of his death, from people who knew Nico, sincere sympathy flowed in upon word of his passing.

One person wrote,

“Taken way too soon bro. The nicest and most caring person I’ve ever met. Love you Nico, gonna miss you brother 🙏🏻❤️”

A coworker remembered Nico saying,

‘Nico wasn’t just a coworker but felt like a big brother to me. He touched a lot of hearts and made sure his presence was known. He’ll be missed dearly. ❤️’

His fraternity brothers have set up a GoFundMe campaign to support Nico’s family during this difficult time.

The campaign organizer, Jordan Bernstein, wrote,

“During this difficult time, we are coming together to support Nico’s family in any way we can. Whether it’s to help with funeral expenses, memorial arrangements, or any other unforeseen costs, every contribution will go directly to his loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
Rest in peace, brother. You will always be in our hearts.”

The campaign aims to raise $22,000 to help with funeral expenses, memorial arrangements, and other unforeseen costs.

Over $13,000 has been collected thus far, proving the outpouring of love and encouragement for Nico and his family.
