Will Sumner was born on 22 October 2003 in the beautiful city of Canto, Georgia. He went to Woodstock high school, where he graduated in 2022. 

Currently, he is a freshman at the University of Georgia, where he is pursuing his major in business. Despite his young age, Sumner is already showing promising signs of having a legendary career. 

In 2022, Will Sumner achieved remarkable success and set multiple records in various track and field events.

At the Brooks PR meet, he claimed victory in the 400-meter dash, setting a new meet record with an impressive time of 45.90 seconds.

This makes two national records on a national level already, and he is just 20 years old. He could easily reach the level of Kenneth Ferguson and other track & field legends in the near future. 

Additionally, Sumner showcased his exceptional skills in relay races, winning world titles at the 2022 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in both the men’s 4x400m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay.

On a state level, he secured the 2022 GHSA 7A 400m title, establishing a state record with a lightning-fast time of 45.78 seconds, and contributed to the success of the winning 4x800m relay team.

Sumner was born into the household of Brad Sumner and Tosha Woodward. He is the second child of the couple.

His older sister Brynne is also a track runner at Clemson University. 

Sumner’s father was the first high school athlete to break the 1:20 barrier in the 600-meter sprint in 1989, with a time of 1:19.56 HSR.

He went on to have a tremendous undergraduate career at Villanova, receiving All-America accolades and running a sub-4:00 mile.

His mother is the NCAA runner-up in the 800 in ’95. She is also a writer and, on top of that, an assistant coach at Woodstock High.

She actively guides her son’s career, among others. Will says that his dad kind of collaborates with her.

Sumner began participating in track and field during his elementary school years, inspired by his parents’ outstanding achievements.

His parents’ deep knowledge of the sport has been useful to him, as he draws inspiration from their triumphs and depends on their guidance and advice.

After drawing upon the legacy of success within his family, he strives to make his own mark in the sport.

Will Sumner Wins The NCAA Men’s 800

As mentioned earlier, Sumner has already started making big headlines for his name at such a young age. 

Sumner won the 800m event in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium, and he is only just in his freshman year.

He literally ran his way to victory by achieving a personal best and creating a new record in the process.

Sumner established himself as the collegiate leader in this race by completing it in 1:44.26, which is the second-fastest in meet history.

Furthermore, Sumner’s amazing run broke the stadium record of 1:44.91 set in 2019 by Kansas’ Bryce Hoppel.

It is important to note that his outstanding performance this year places him as the third-best performer in the globe.

Sumner has credited his astounding performance to his steadfast belief in his training and the instruction of his coach.
