Tony Crane, a sophomore student at Wilmington College in Ohio, passed away early Sunday morning, March 23, 2025, at the age of 20, from a gunshot wound at an off-campus incident.

A 20-year-old athlete, Tony Crane, is survived by his parents, Dave and Dawn E. Crane, and three siblings: sister Kayleigh Crane and two brothers.

His parents, Dave and Dawn, walked down the aisle on June 27, 1992. They have been married for 33 years.

Neither of his parents nor siblings have broken their silence surrounding Tony’s tragic demise.

According to reports from the Wilmington Police Department, officers responded to the DTS fraternity house at 780 Rombach Avenue around 12:43 a.m. after Crane sustained a fatal gunshot wound.

Despite emergency efforts, Tony Crane was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Later, a firearm was recovered, and a preliminary investigation suggests the incident may have been a suicide, although the investigation remains ongoing.

The young athlete’s body was sent to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for further examination.

Crane was a standout member of the Wilmington Quakers football team, where he played as an offensive lineman and appeared in ten games during the past season.

His bio on the athletic department’s website highlights his roots in Fishers, Indiana, and his contributions to the team.

Tony Crane’s participation roster for the 2024 football season reveals a packed schedule.

He had matchups, including teams such as Wooster, Baldwin Wallace, Muskingum, Ohio Northern, Mount Union, Otterbein, John Carroll, Marietta, Heidelberg, and Capita.

Beyond athletics, Tony Crane was an active participant in the DTS fraternity.

Likewise, he was also involved in Y-NOT Cattle, a cattle operation. He had participated in a beef fitting contest back in 2022.

Y-NOT Cattle expressed their grief by writing a lengthy eulogy on their Facebook page, which reads:

We are at a complete loss for words today, as we mourn the loss of one of our own.
Tony, we love you brother, and will greatly miss you. It’s not even fair that you won’t be around anymore.
This one hurts big
We pray for your family, friends and everyone involved.
GREAT young man gone way too soon!

Wilmington College canceled classes on Monday, March 24, 2025, to allow the campus community time to mourn.

Sigrid Solomon, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, shared the heartbreaking news with the campus in a statement, saying,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of one of our own, Tony Crane.
