Derek Manning Jr., or “Lil D” as popularly known, tragically passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025.
Derek was the son of Amie Laramy and Derek Manning Sr. and resided with his family in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Manning Jr. was the youngest among three brothers, two of whom were older, Taron and Camron.
At the time of his passing, Derek was in his early teens, with an expected graduation year from school in 2031.
The circumstances surrounding Derek Manning Jr.’s death are under investigation, and no official information has been released.
Derek Jr. was a sports enthusiast interested in baseball, basketball, and football. He was a member of the Westside Smash Baseball team.

Derek was a seven-year Western Little League (WLL) member, making the All-Star team the past three years.
A highlight of his time in WLL was hitting his first “official” home run, sending the ball out of the park.
In addition to participating in WLL, he played travel baseball with Westside Smash.
He also played basketball and football at Kenowa Hills while attending Kenowa Hills Middle School as a sixth-grader. Derek proudly wore the #10 jersey.

Derek’s death has sparked an outpouring of support and sympathy from those who knew him.

“I was so shocked and sad to hear this. I know he was a big part of your lives and will leave such a hole in the lives of so many. My heart and prayers go out to lift up all those he leaves behind that will be missing him. Hugs to all of you.’

Another described Derek’s personality by stating,
“Derek Jr. was more than just a talented athlete; he was a beacon of positivity and joy. His smile could light up any room, and his energy was contagious. As a member of the Westside Smash, he showcased not only his athletic ability but also his unwavering dedication to his team and the sport he loved.”

Westside SMASH also expressed their condolences on Facebook, describing Derek as a bright light who brought passion, kindness, and joy to those around him and further said His presence on and off the field will be deeply missed.
A GoFundMe fund has been started by Sarah DeSantis, a close friend of Derek’s mother, to help Derek’s parents with the financial expenses.
The target amount was $20,000, but it has already exceeded more than $33,000, showing the community support.
Though Derek Jr.’s life was taken too soon, his spirit, passion, and kindness will live on to motivate those who knew him.
