Sha’Quatrell Harper’s death has left his family and community struggling with heartbreak and loss.
The body of 14-year-old Sha’Quatrell Harper was recovered from Lake Kesslerwood on the morning of July 7, 2025, bringing a heartbreaking end to an intensive search effort.
Nicknamed “Quada” by those who loved him, Sha’Quatrell disappeared beneath the lake’s surface Sunday evening after jumping into the water from a pontoon boat and never resurfacing.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the 5800 block of Fall Creek Parkway North just before 6:28 p.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a missing swimmer.
Friends who were with Sha’Quatrell tried to locate him in the water immediately after he went under but were unable to find him.
Search and rescue efforts quickly escalated. Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Fishers Fire Department, and Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) worked throughout the night using boats, sonar technology, divers, and a remotely operated vehicle.
Despite their exhaustive efforts, it wasn’t until 10:20 a.m. the following morning that DNR officials located and recovered his body using sonar equipment.
Indiana Conservation Officer David Moss emphasized the dangers of open-water swimming, stating,
“Take water seriously would be my advice. It can be fun and refreshing, but any time you get in the water, there can be a danger.”
