A tragic case out of South Carolina has left a community devastated, as a young boy, Jaysen Carr, has died after contracting a rare and deadly brain-eating amoeba known as Naegleria fowleri.
On Wednesday, Prisma Health Richland Children’s Hospital in Columbia confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating that a patient treated at their facility had succumbed to the illness.
While the South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) confirmed a case of the amoeba earlier in the week, they did not initially confirm the death.
The amoeba, scientifically known as Naegleria fowleri, was identified the week of July 7, according to health officials.
It is typically found in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes and rivers, but in rare cases, it has been detected in tap water.
While it poses no danger when swallowed, it can become life-threatening if it enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain.
Health authorities emphasized that cases are sporadic, with fewer than 10 reported annually in the United States, but when infection occurs, it is almost always fatal.
Jaysen Carr Had A Life Full Of Promise
Jaysen was described as a vibrant and gifted child, excelling in academics, music, and multiple sports.
He was in 7th grade at Dreher High School, having already skipped a grade.
He was not only a consistent honor roll student but also a skilled musician who earned first chair in band and was selected for the prestigious Honor Band.
His athletic talents were equally impressive. Jaysen played football, track, basketball, and three divisions of baseball.
He was part of an undefeated basketball team that went on to win the district championship and had already secured spots on both the B Team and Junior Varsity baseball squads.
Yet, those who knew Jaysen say his accomplishments only scratched the surface of who he was.
One tribute read,
“He was the life of every room he walked into. He made friends with everyone from every background. He loved deeply and laughed freely.”

A Community Grieves For The Beloved Soul
Jaysen Carr is survived by his parents, Clarence Carr and Ebony Carter Carr.
Tributes have flooded social media and local forums, painting a picture of a young boy whose life left a profound impact on those around him.
One family friend said,
“R.I.P Jaysen Carr… he had such a bright future ahead of him.”

Family friends and teammates described Jaysen’s infectious laughter, his love for fun adventures like pool trips and baseball tournaments, and the deep connections he built with everyone around him.
Jaysen Carr’s life will be honored in a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, July 26, at 2:00 PM at Shandon United Methodist Church.
In his memory, a local fundraiser has begun through the sale of custom shirts to support the Carr family.
