After 18 Years, Coach André Jones Leaves Charles City HS Athletic Director Role, Shocked By School Board’s Decision To Remove Him As Track Coach!

Jones did not renew his contract as Athletic Director.

There is currently no clear public explanation from the School Board about why Coach André Jones was removed as the head track coach. He confirms that the reason given to him was a new policy preventing athletic directors from also serving as coaches.

Coach André Jones is the longtime Athletic Director (and often coach) at Charles City County High School in Virginia.

He has been with the district for around 18 years, serving in multiple roles, including track and field, basketball, and football coach.

Recent online discussions indicate that after approximately 18 years in his AD/coaching roles, André Jones may have stepped down or been removed, particularly as track coach.

Andre Jones Expressed Frustration And Confusion Over His Removal As Head Track Coach!

Coach André Jones has confirmed through a detailed Facebook post that he has not renewed his contract as the school’s Athletic Director.

He stated that part of his decision was prompted by the school board’s recent move not to bring him back as the head indoor and outdoor track and field coach.

While some initially believed this may be speculation, Jones himself made the announcement public.

He clarified that it’s not a rumor but a decision made by the board.

Expressing his disappointment, he said the board cited a policy change that prevents athletic directors from coaching.

In his message, Jones shared how stunned and confused he was by the decision, especially given his long-standing commitment and success.

He emphasized that he received no opportunity to defend himself and questioned why he could still serve as AD but not as coach, saying:

But what bothers me is that I have the capability to serve as the athletic director but not as the head track and field coach? Don’t I deserve the right to have an explanation after holding such a position for 18 years? Don’t I deserve the right to defend myself?

Citing other schools in the region where ADs and even principals coach sports, Jones argued that his situation contradicts common practice.

Despite being offered to stay on as Athletic Director, he felt disrespected that his coaching contributions were disregarded, saying:

I feel unappreciated for the time and hours I put in. I was at roughly 98 percent of every home game. Football, basketball (even those away basketball games), volleyball, track, Scholastic Bowl, baseball, and softball, I was there. Taking tickets, keeping the scorebook, things that technically aren’t my responsibility, but yet I did those things so that the programs could continue and function properly. Online updates and website managing? That was me as well. And I started those social media pages long before I became an Athletic Director. And yes, I still was successful as a coach…

He expressed that the lack of explanation and transparency made the decision even harder to accept.

Beyond coaching, Jones outlined the personal sacrifices and commitment he made to support the school’s entire athletic program.

He highlighted how fundraisers he led for track and field helped cover expenses for other sports.

He said his AD salary remained low for years compared to what similar roles typically pay, but he stayed because of his love for the students and the community.

Feeling undervalued and targeted, Jones said it’s time to stand on his principles and step away, saying:

I guess I feel that I have been personally targeted because I did my job as both an athletic director and coach the right way. I feel insulted, I really do.

At last, he thanked his student-athletes, fellow coaches, and the community for their support.

Coach André Jones’ Supporters Expressed Disappointment Over His Removal!

Fans, student-athletes, and fellow coaches have shown strong support for Coach André Jones.

They expressed disappointment and frustration over the school board’s decision to remove him as head track coach.

Many praise his dedication, leadership, and the positive impact he has had on the community and student-athletes over the years.

On social media, they’ve shared messages thanking him for his hard work and commitment.

One of Coach André Jones’s well-wishers responded to his post saying:

I am beyond disappointed about the short sighted decision of the SB. The bottom line, Andre Jones, is that they have no clue as to what your jobs entail. Furthermore, they are certainly ignorant to your worth to athletics specifically, but to the school system as a whole. I guess they’ll reach in their back pocket to replace you. Not happening. I’m sure they’ll fill the positions, but they won’t replace you. Sad for Charles City

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • Jones has coached several state-level athletes, including state champions and runners-up.
  • He is a certified Virginia High School League (VHSL) state official and regularly works track meets at various levels.
