It was at the age of 16 that her life took a pivotal turn. Her sister Vanessa gave her an invitation to her dojo, which enabled Amanda to embark on her Brazilian jiu-jitsu journey.

Initially, she was living with Vanessa in an apartment that was pretty far away from her gym. It was a time of great struggle for the siblings.

As the lone female among her peers and with the gym logo bearing two lions, Amanda’s coach and fellow students bestowed upon her the nickname “Leoa” (meaning lioness in Portuguese).

Even today, this moniker remains an integral part of her identity.

Her two sisters are not well-known in the public. But they adore and are the staunchest supporters of their younger siblings.

The fighter is always finding ways to be with her family, who are living back in Brazil.

Nina Nunes holds a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo as well as a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The couple became engaged in August 2018 after their. They welcomed their first child, a daughter called Raegan Ann Nunes, on September 24, 2020.

She began using the surname Nunes in the UFC in April 2021. Amanda has given credit to the UFC for helping her find love.
