Andre Lloyd Miller was born in Los Angeles, California, on March 19, 1976. He was born as the eldest child to his mother, Andrea Robinson. Sadly, his father’s whereabouts are unknown.

Andre’s family dealt with a tragedy when his younger brother, Duane Miller, died due to illness, namely viral encephalitis. Andre’s mother became more protective and strict regarding him following the event. 

Despite struggling financially, his mother put him in private school, emphasizing academics’ significance. Her mom wanted him to be successful in life.

During that time, sports did not fit in the dictionary of success. Sports were more of recreational activity and had no significance in Andre’s family.

Andre’s mother placed a high value on schoolwork and assisting around the house. She wanted him to do well in academics and get a good income job.

But, when she figured out Andre had an interest in basketball and wanted to make a career out of it, she fully supported him.

For education, Andre attended Verbum Dei High School and graduated with a degree in sociology from the University of Utah.

Andre Miller | Amateur Career

Andre was already a high school basketball legend at Verbum Dei High School. He was selected CIF Division 4A Player of the Year.

Furthermore, he received the Wooden Award as MVP of the Southern Section of the California Interscholastic Federation in 1994.  

Similarly, Miller attended the University of Utah and played basketball for the Utah Runnin Utes college basketball team. He initially started as a point guard and later played as team leader.

In 1997, Miller rose to national prominence after leading the Utah Runnin’ Utes to the 1998 Final Four title game.

Miller was already a national sensation by his senior year, winning First Team All-America accolades from the Associated Press, NABC, Sporting News, and USBWA. He was also named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Player of the Year in 2007.

During his four years at Utah, Miller averaged 12.1 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game. He also concluded his career as Utah’s all-time steals leader and assists second.

Andre was a basketball legend coming out of college. It wasn’t a question of whether Miller would be drafted or not; it was how high and with whom.

As expected, Miller was selected eighth overall in the 1999 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He arrived in Cleveland with big expectations, and he did not disappoint.

During his time with the Cavaliers, Miller was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Also, he became the first player in Cleveland history to earn Player of the Week twice.

Furthermore, he established a team mark for most assists in a season and was the only NBA player to average more than ten assists and points during the 2001–02 NBA season.

Despite being a stellar player, Cleveland traded him to Los Angeles Clippers in 2002. He played for the team for one year before signing six years deal with the Denver Nuggets on August 1, 2003.

However, Miller was traded by the Nuggets to the Philadelphia 76ers on December 19, 2006. It was a massive loss for Nugget as Miller proved himself the dark horse in the 2006–07 season.

Miller’s numbers improved in several areas with his career records. Due to his stellar performance, Miller was offered a three-year, $21 million contract by the Blazers. He signed the contract on July 24, 2009.
