Both of his sisters are professional basketball players. Agata is the youngest, and Ola is the Eldest among the three of them. Ola plays for Utah.

Likewise, Anna is living her mother’s dream as she has always wanted to see her daughter be one of the finest basketball players. Anna is doing really well in all her games.

Education

Makurat attended Connecticut University. For her high school education, she attended the Sports Champion School.

Anna Makurat | Professional Career

Anna Makurat started her carrier in 2013. She began with the BAT Sierakowice club’s youth groups.

She is eager to show everyone that she has the attitude and expertise to play like the poised professional she was ten years older than her Poland’s premier professional league as a teenager playing against women before she came to UConn.

Auriemma, her coach, said the one thing she enjoyed about her before she arrived at Storrs last summer was that she was an absolute professional who did not get distracted.

Her teammates spoke about how lethal her 3-point shot was during pickup games.

UConn Women’s Basketball

Women’s basketball at UConn is not exactly regarded as an easy place to play for a first-year student.

Breanna Stewart struggled until the postseason of her first year, while current team members Crystal Dangerfield and Megan Walker did not make a consistent impact until they were sophomores.

It’s hard enough to transition from high school ball to college and the added burden of playing in the best program.

However, as Christyn Williams did last season, some players can transcend all that and be a starter from the get-go. Geno Auriemma expects Anna Makurat, a Polish freshman, to fall into the latter classification.

Before coming to UConn, Makurat played for Arka Gdynia in Basket Liga Kobiet, Poland’s professional league.

The league has included various WNBA players such as former Husky Tiffany Hayes and the Connecticut Sun’s Jasmine Thomas, and the New York Liberty’s Rebecca Allen.

Although Makurat did not experience much basketball outside of summer workouts at UConn, she got enough of a feeling for the level of play to equate it to the Polish league.

Makurat should have remained in her home country because she was already competing in a professional league and started her pro career at age 19. But the right choice often isn’t always the simplest.

“You’ve got to get out of your comfort zone sometimes to pursue your dream,” she said. “It’s always been my dream to come here and play basketball, to compete and play at the highest level.”

Makurat is anticipated to be an immediate add-up for the Huskies with an urge to stroke it from deep and strong court vision. Well, at least an instant-impact addition on offense.

Achievements In Recent Games

Last season, Anna Makurat managed to cope better than others. The first player from Poland of The Huskies eventually worked out what was expected of her and started to play well by the end of the regular season.

Last year, Makurat scored 7.9 points per game, ranking second in assists for the team (105) and then tied for third in steals (47).

Then, she shot a combined 1-for-13 over her career’s first three games and missed all ten 3-pointers she tried. Adjusting her sluggish gait to a much quicker American pace of play proved to be challenging.

To make more shots and games, pressing a little bit just affected her confidence more. Till May 1, 2019, Anna has the following awards and achievements:

New And Improved Anna

“Anna is entirely different,” her Coach, Auriemma, said.

“She looks like a completely different person and a completely different player. A full 180 (degree turn) from last year is her preparation level.”

“She’s been with the national team over there in Poland for a few weeks, and you can tell. She’s so optimistic, and her pace is so fast (it has improved). Most of it (is better).”

Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who, after the players returned to campus, has worked with Makurat in a four-person pod, said she certainly looks much more relaxed and fit.

“I believe seeing how hard she worked in the offseason and how she worked at home is the most exciting part,” said Nelson-Ododa. “It’s always fun to see her feel more relaxed. I am thrilled to see how she is going to do it in this season’s game.”

She said she felt out of shape the year before, and because of that, rather than worrying about basketball and doing the stuff she wished she should do, she was worried about being exhausted on the court.

After playing professionally in Poland, Makurat came in with a reputation as a good shooter, but she has hit just 31 percent of her attempts (9 of 32 from 3-point range) and averages just 4.2 points per game.

However, she has demonstrated a capacity to move the ball. Her 26 assists are tied for the team’s second-most.

Highlights and Achievements

Practices after the Covid-19 situation

When the postseason was suddenly interrupted by worries about the COVID-19 pandemic, while there were still discrepancies throughout her game, she had turned the corner into an elite player in her growth.

Makurat said, “I certainly began to feel more relaxed in the system. I have now begun to do what I am capable of doing in court. I have not hesitated and didn’t overthink it all.”

At the moment, that is, she played basketball at the level her physical fitness would allow. She then returned home and started to mold her body into the form she wanted to make the most of her chance at UConn.

With games against Top 25 teams in Baylor (Jan. 9), Tennessee (Jan. 23), Oregon (Feb. 3), and South Carolina, the Huskies’ schedule will pick up in strength in the new year (Feb. 10).

One giant learning experience for Makurat has been this first stretch of the season. She struggled through an early shooting slump, missing her first 11 attempts, and in just her fifth game, she was benched.

It helped her get into better shape by spending most of the spring and a portion of the summer at home, and that can only help.
