The Oklahoma and Arkansas communities are mourning the loss of Phillip Edward Norvell, a beloved professor, passionate educator, and dedicated Arkansas Razorbacks supporter, who passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2025, following a brief illness.

His life was filled with love for teaching, adventure, and community, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Born on October 28, 1944, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Phillip was the youngest child of Murvin Cecil and Bernice Norvell.

Growing up in a large family with ten siblings, he learned the value of connection and hard work at an early age.

Phillip graduated from Southeast High School in 1962, where he was known for his sharp mind and warm personality.

He went on to attend the University of Oklahoma, laying the foundation for his lifelong passion for learning and teaching.

In 1975, Phillip joined the faculty of the University of Arkansas School of Law, where he became a cornerstone of the institution.

For over four decades, he taught Property, Oil and Gas, and Natural Resources Law, shaping the minds of countless Arkansas lawyers.

His teaching style, often marked by a sharp wit and the Socratic method, was both challenging and inspiring.

Phillip loved teaching and poured his heart into his students, continuing as a full-time professor until his retirement in 2018.

Even after retiring, he remained engaged as an adjunct Professor Emeritus until 2023, leaving a legacy of excellence in legal education.

Students and colleagues remember him as brilliant, kind, and unforgettable. Haley Heath Chaney, a former student, shared,

“I loved him! He was so funny and had a sweet side he liked to keep hidden under that ruthless Socratic method. He was a big part of my wonderful law school experience.”

Another former student, Christy Ferguson Comstock, recalled,

“I took every class he taught and adored him. He was wicked smart with a wonderful sense of humor and a big heart. I’ve never had a teacher who wanted us to learn more than he did.”

His ability to connect with students, whether through humor or his genuine care for their success, made him a beloved figure at the law school.

Beyond the Classroom, Phillip Lived a Vibrant and Fulfilling Life

He was an avid gardener, spending hours tending to his plants with care and pride.

His daily walks around Mount Sequoyah in Fayetteville were a cherished ritual, during which he found peace and a connection with nature.

A devoted Arkansas Razorbacks fan, Phillip could often be found cheering at football and baseball games, his enthusiasm for the team infectious to those around him.

Phillip was also a voracious reader, diving into books that expanded his already vast knowledge.

His love for travel took him across the globe, with frequent trips to the United Kingdom, France, and Russia.

Each journey added to his rich collection of stories and experiences, which he often shared with friends and family.

Phillip’s warm personality and unique presence left a mark on everyone he met. Mary Elizabeth Ryan, who worked at the law school, remembered,

“There was never a day I saw those boots or that hat he loved to wear coming down the hallway and didn’t smile. He was kind and hilarious, brilliant and humble.”

Sherry Hignite Tuck added,

“He made Oil and Gas class fun, and his sweet side would shine through. He will be missed!”

These heartfelt tributes reflect the deep admiration and affection people had for Phillip.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Murvin Cecil and Bernice Norvell, and his siblings: brothers James, Mike, William, Robert, and Cecil, and sisters Beverly, Jeanne, Louise, and Dorothy.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and laughter that will live on in the hearts of his students, colleagues, and friends.

Phillip’s funeral will be held at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 26, 2025.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the University of Arkansas School of Law in memory of Professor Phillip Edward Norvell.

These donations will honor his lifelong dedication to education and support the institution he loved.

Whether he was teaching future lawyers, cheering for the Razorbacks, or exploring new corners of the globe, Phillip approached life with curiosity and heart.

His memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
