How many times do you think you can hear rejection from a certain place? When do you think it will be the right time to hear “Enough is Enough”?
As we go around the athletes, you can find many with such attitudes; however, only a few stand aloof in it.
Similarly, Baker Mayfield is the one who stands tall amidst the rejection. Mayfield is an American football quarterback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL).
Furthermore, he commenced his sports days in high school, bearing rejections but still thriving in his own way.
As he started his career back in 2013 by standing at 6-foot-1 tall while weighing 190-pounds, he featured as a quarterback for the Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas.
From that day on, he has faced and overcome the ups and downs that life throws at him. For the ups, he had gone as far as being the best thing to come into Ohio sports since LeBron James, while he had also faced the deepest to the times when he had been doomed and busted.
“Everywhere I look, someone is telling me, ‘you’re not good enough,’ or ‘You can’t do this or that.’ You can only hear that so many times before enough is enough.”

Baker Mayfield | Early Life, Family, and Educational Background
Mayfield was born on April 14, 1995, under Aries’ star sign to his parents, James Mayfield and Gina Mayfield. He grew up in Austin, Texas, alongside his older brother, Matt Mayfield.
During his childhood, his father worked as a private equity consultant and faced hurdles in business, due to which they had to sell their house and shift from one rental place to the other.
Additionally, his father, James, played football for the University of Houston for three years; however, he couldn’t climb much into it as he did not get varsity letters.
Besides, Mayfield grew up rooting for Oklahoma and dreamed of playing for them as he attended every game. So as he grew up being an OU fan, he started playing in his high school days.
High School (Lake Travis High School)
At first, he featured in his High school football team as the starting quarterback for the Cavaliers. During his two seasons tenure, he recorded 25–2 for the team and claimed the 2011 4A State Championship.
As a junior, he posted 247 of 378 passing (65.3 percent) for 3,788 yards, 45 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
For his senior days, he started to go for the Class 5A but was sadly eliminated by Pflugerville with 23-20. Having these, he could still maintain 63.2 percent of his passes for 2,467 yards, 22 TDs, and three interceptions.
Baker Mayfield | College Career
Texas Tech
Right before the commencement of the 2013 season, former Lake Travis quarterback Michael Brewer had to be sidelined due to his back injury; hence, Mayfield replaced him starting as a quarterback.
Therefore, he was well-off with his duty and was named the first walk-on, true freshman quarterback to start a season opener at the quarterback position.
Besides, his start-off was an unmistakable winner as right in it; he surpassed a record by Billy Joe Tolliver as he had 43 completions of 60 attempts.
In the meantime, he also won the match against SMU (41-23), where he had 413 yards and four touchdowns. Additionally, he also neared the NCAA Division I FBS single-game record set by Luke McCown, which fell just four completions short.
Similarly, he also entered into the class of former Red Raider head coach Kliff Kingsbury bagging the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Mayfield improvised his 780 season yards and seven touchdowns to get it through 755 yards and six touchdowns in the bargain.
Injury and Onwards
Following it, he struggled through his injury, due to which he was replaced by his fellow teammate Davis Webb. Unfortunately, Texas Tech had a continuous five-game losing streak during his absence, and he couldn’t return until the third loss.
Afterward, when he had an interview with ESPN, he made the following statement, “When I got healthy, I didn’t know why I wasn’t playing right away. At that time, we were losing a couple of games in a row.
I was still clueless as to why I wasn’t playing. That was really frustrating for me because I started the first five games, and we won. So, I didn’t really know exactly what he was thinking or what the situation was.”
Having all these, he continued his season and ended with 2,315 yards on 218-of-340 completions with 12 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
Furthermore, he did not see why he could not bag the Big 12 Conference Freshman Offensive Player of the Year; hence, he claimed it too.
He was also named the top ten finalists for the Burlsworth Trophy (best player in Division I football who began his college career as a walk-on) in November.
Sadly, in December, Mayfield announced his leave from Texas due to “miscommunication” with the coaching staff. The news surfaced that though being an above-average quarterback, he was not given any scholarship.
Oklahoma
Mayfield transferred to the University of Oklahoma in January 2014, and he had reasoned his transfer to be “pretty unfair” for scholarship reasons.
However, things got ugly when Texas denied the allegations for the scholarship issues. Mayfield was to sit out of the 2014 season due to the Big 12 Conference transfer rules as things did not end here.
As per the Big 12 Conference transfer rules, a player must lose a year of eligibility if they transfer from one conference to another. Even so, they would waive off the year’s tenure if the former conference made a statement for which Baker pleaded the Texas Tech to do; however, they did not.
Moving forward, Mayfield did not do much for the 2014 season, and at one time, he was even kicked out of a Lubbock restaurant the night before OU and Texas Tech’s match.
For the same incident, Mayfield later said, “Besides eat my tacos and drink my water, I don’t think (I did anything to deserve it). I didn’t want any trouble, so I just walked happily out of there and went on.”
The Year 2015
Mayfield got eligible for the 2015 season; hence, he started successfully as he won an open quarterback competition against Trevor Knight.
On August 24, he was then named the starting quarterback for the Sooners, and he made his debut for them on September 6 against Akron. Mayfield had a 41-3 victory in his debut as he posted 388 passing yards with three passing touchdowns on 23 completions.
In the following game, he starred at Tennessee at Neyland Stadium, where he had a slow start; however, he banged at the fourth quarter, and by the end, they had a 31–24 win in double overtime.
Therefore, they were ranked 19th while the Volunteers were ranked 23rd, and overall, Mayfield had 187 yards and three touchdowns on 19 completions while throwing two interceptions.
Likewise, in his third game, he recorded his career-high 487 yards and four touchdowns against Tulsa, which came as a 52-38 win.
Similarly, by the end of the year, he had 3,700 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, leading Oklahoma to the 2015 Orange Bowl.
At the same time, he stood fourth in voting for the Heisman Trophy and was even inducted into the 2015 College Football Playoff semifinal.
The Year 2016
The year 2016 was supposed to be his last year after the two years of eligibility; however, he started the season with a 23-33 loss against Houston as he posted 323 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Right after it, he had a chance to face Texas on October 8, which came as a 45-40 victory as he had 390 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.
On the other game, on October 22, he had 545 passing yards and seven touchdowns, claiming another victory against Texas. During the game, he was matched up with the future NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
As for the season, they featured in five games, which were all victories for the Sooners, where he tallied a total of 1,321 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Baker finished third-placed voting for the season’s Heisman Trophy as they advanced for the 2017 Sugar Bowl game against Auburn. Mayfield recorded 19 completions on 28 attempts for 296 passing yards and two touchdowns. By the end of the match, he claimed the MVP title.
The Year 2017
As the new year commenced, much news was there regarding his former scholarship programs, which were sorted out by making him eligible and adding a year for his gameplay.
Hence, on 2017 September 9, he was back in the games against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, which eventually came out as a victory.
He played against Oklahoma State for the further games, a 62–52 loss with five passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
In November’s match against Kansas, Mayfield had to make a public apology after mouthing “F_ck You!” grabbing his crotch and saying “go and watch basketball” to the public.
However, the game was a 41-3 victory, and after it, he was removed from the strong position by coach Lincoln Riley.
In December, Mayfield led Oklahoma to its third straight Big 12 championship, which they defeated 41-17 to the TCU Horned Frogs, and in the meantime, he was titled the MVP.
In the national game’s semifinal, he managed to bag a 54–48 win in the 2018 Rose Bowl against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Finally, by the end of the year, he claimed the 2017 Heisman Trophy on December 9, as he had a total of 2,398 points. The numbers converted into percentages get 86%, which is ranked the third-highest for the Heishman Trophy.
Mayfield is also the only walk-on player to win the Heisman Trophy.
Big 12 on Mayfield’s Eligibility
In general, college administrations never pass out the rule for the students to rule out eligibility. However, as NCAA did not meet the criteria, and Texas had not provided him a written scholarship; thus, they ruled out the option of his eligibility.
In fact, they will allow the only walk-ons to have an election year if they are not provided a written scholarship, as the Big 12 faculty athletic representatives voted against a rule proposal.
The amended proposal received a 7-3 vote and was passed out; thus, Mayfield could play for the year 2017.
Baker Mayfield | Cleveland Browns
On July 24, 2018, Mayfield signed a four-year contract with the Cleveland Browns for the $32.68 million guaranteed salary. Mayfield was selected for the 2018 NFL Draft in the first pick.
The Year 2018
Mayfield had the 2018 season as a star stud as, after the end of it, no one seems to get over his gameplay. He first started in Week 3 against the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football for the season, where he threw more than 200 yards, claiming the Browns’ victory.
After it, he commenced his play as the Browns’ started and won a match against the division rival Baltimore Ravens with a 12–9 overtime victory.
From Week 10 onward, he led the league in passing DVOA with a 28–16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. He had 216 yards, three touchdowns, and a passer rating of 151.2, with no turnovers in the same game.
Similarly, they won against the Cincinnati Bengals, marking every game as swaggy, followed by a loss against the Houston Texas, and refilled with a victory over the Carolina Panthers.
On the one hand, for Week 16, he won AFC Offensive Player of the Week in a 26–18 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. But, on the other hand, he claimed the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for the sixth time.
Following it, he was immature when he had to pay the fine of $10,026 for pretending to expose his private parts to Browns’ offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens. However, Kitchens labeled it as an inside joke between them and Mayfield.
2018 Results
By the end of the season, he led the Browns to a 7-8-1 record and their most number of wins, thanks to his savvy and accurate gameplay.
In the meantime, he surpassed Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson for most touchdowns thrown in a rookie season with 27 while he had 3,725 passing yards.
Additionally, Mayfield has also been titled the favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year and was named the League’s 50th best player. Baker became the second starting quarterback to receive the 2018 PFWA All-Rookie behind Tim Couch.
The Year 2019
Mayfield commenced his 2019 season against the Tennessee Titans, where he had 285 yards and a touchdown. However, in the same game, he had a dumb penalty, which Malcolm Butler returned as they lost the game 13-43.
Following it, they faced the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, where he had 325 passing yards as they win with 23-3.
Moving forward, they had a winning streak against the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers one after the other. In Week 6, they had a 31-26 loss over the Seattle Seahawks, where he posted 249 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.
Following it, they had a four-losing streak, which was cut off with a game against the Buffalo Bills, as they had a 19-16 victory.
Consequently, he recorded 327 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in Week 12 and became the first quarterback to start all 16 games in Week 17.
Mayfield had 827 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions by the end of the season, as the Browns finished with a 6–10 record.
The Year 2020
At first, Mayfield commenced against the Baltimore Ravens with 189 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the 6–38 loss.
Secondly, as his first week had lost, his other week came as a 35-30 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. However, by Week 6, he had accomplished 10 of 18 passes for 119 yards, and at the same time, he suffered a minor rib injury.
Thus, he was replaced by Case Keenum in the third quarter, and right after his return, he posted his career-high five touchdowns.
Finally, in Week 7, he was titled AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Then, jumping right on to November 7, Mayfield was placed in COVID-19 reserve as he came in contact with a person who tested positive but then was back in the field just three days later.
