In the world of soccer, few couples represent the sport’s passion and dedication as vividly as Albertin Montoya and his wife, Erin Montoya.
Together, they’ve built a life steeped in soccer, balancing family, coaching, and a shared love for the game.
Their story is one of talent, teamwork, and a commitment to promoting the next generation of players.
A Montoya Couple’s Shared Journey Through Soccer
Albertin Montoya, the head coach of Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), has earned accolades such as Soccer America’s Women’s Coach of the Year and a spot as a finalist for FIFA Women’s World Coach of the Year in 2010.
His leadership at Bay FC has been a focal point recently, with the team showing competitive grit in matches like their 1-0 loss to Orlando Pride on June 13, 2025, and a 2-1 defeat to Gotham FC on June 22, 2025.
Despite these losses, Albertin highlighted his team’s ability to compete with the NWSL’s best, a testament to his coaching philosophy.
But behind every great coach is a supportive partner, and for Albertin, that’s Erin Montoya.
Erin, a former professional soccer player, brings her own impressive credentials to the table.
Hailing from Los Altos, California, and raised in Fremont, Erin honed her skills at Mission San Jose High School and later at Santa Clara University.

She played club soccer with Fremont Youth Soccer and went on to compete professionally with the San Diego Spirit in the Women’s United Soccer Association.
Erin also represented the U.S. on the U19 Youth National Team, a highlight of her playing career.
After hanging up her cleats, Erin transitioned into coaching, where she found her true calling.
Her passion for working with young athletes led her to co-found the Montoya Soccer Academy (MSA), a platform that combines her love for soccer with her knack for connecting with kids.
Erin’s coaching resume is nothing short of remarkable: she’s led teams to nine state championships, three regional championships, and three national championships, including one with MVLA Lightning and two with MVLA Barcelona.
She’s also mentored over 20 national team players, a feat that speaks to her ability to inspire and develop talent.
Erin’s coaching philosophy centers on creating a fun, competitive environment where players look forward to practice.
Her time at Los Altos High School, where her team won a Central Coast Section (CCS) championship, is a cherished memory.
Erin credits her college coach, Jerry Smith, at Santa Clara University, for shaping her approach.
The Montoya Household Is A Soccer Hub
Albertin and Erin have two children, Allie and Mikey, who have inherited their parents’ love for the game.
Allie, a standout player, followed in her mother’s footsteps by playing for MVLA before joining the Stanford Cardinal women’s soccer team.
Mikey, meanwhile, is currently with MVLA, thriving in the same competitive environment his parents have fostered.
The family’s shared passion extends beyond the field.
Erin, an avid Barcelona fan and Lionel Messi admirer, often spends time with Albertin discussing strategies and player development.
Their two labs add a playful energy to their home, rounding out a family that lives and breathes soccer.
Albertin’s Tenure At Bay FC Hasn’t Been Without Challenges
In March 2025, the NWSL launched an independent investigation following complaints and a report by The San Francisco Chronicle, which alleged a toxic workplace environment during Bay FC’s inaugural 2024 season.
Conducted by Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, the investigation concluded on July 8, 2025, clearing Albertin of violating the NWSL’s workplace policies.
However, it noted “shortcomings in Coach Montoya’s communication style” that caused emotional harm to some players.
No disciplinary actions were taken, and Albertin has continued coaching into the 2025 season, with Bay FC implementing recommended improvements in communication and support structures.
Through it all, Erin has been a steadfast partner, offering support as Albertin navigates the pressures of professional coaching.
Beyond their personal achievements, Albertin and Erin are shaping the future of soccer.
Albertin’s recent moves at Bay FC, including securing new contracts for five players on July 1, 2025, and signing three-time All-American midfielder Hannah Bebar to a three-year deal on July 2, 2025, reflect his vision for the team.
He has praised his players’ professionalism and passion, qualities that he and Erin both instill in their athletes.
Erin’s work with the Montoya Soccer Academy and MVLA continues to inspire young players.
Her ability to blend discipline with joy has made her one of the country’s top youth coaches.
Albertin and Erin Montoya are more than a coach and a former player—they’re a team.
Their shared journey, from the fields of Fremont to the sidelines of Bay FC and MVLA, is a testament to their dedication to soccer and each other.
With two talented kids, two lively labs, and a legacy of championships and mentorship, the Montoyas are a true soccer power couple, proving that passion and partnership can create something extraordinary.
