The Bayside High School community is mourning the heartbreaking news of head football coach Jon White’s passing on Sunday, November 16, 2025.
He leaves behind his beloved wife and sons, while the details of his death remain private for now.
Just two days earlier, on Friday, Coach White led the Marlins in a playoff game.
He was a familiar and respected face in Hampton Roads high school athletics. For decades, he has shaped young lives both on and off the field.
Coach White was a true pillar in Hampton Roads high school sports and a familiar, respected face in the Bayside community.
People who knew him are sharing stories of a man who was far more than a coach; he was a mentor, a father figure, and a friend to so many.
Tributes from players, colleagues, and friends highlight him as not just a coach but also a father figure, mentor, and friend.
Jaylen Cofield, a fraternity brother, shared his grief.
“First, my condolences to the family of my beloved frat brother John White. May God strengthen you all during this difficult time. Frat, I’m hurt with this one! A father, coach, mentor—whatever you needed, J White was that guy! Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to make highlight videos for the boys. I was able to witness the bond you had with them and how much they respected you as more than their coach. Never a dull moment when we got together! Never forget during warm-ups when ‘Wipe Me Down’ came on and you immediately looked my way knowing the whistle was about to come out. This one truly hurts but we will stay strong and keep your legacy going. LLJWHITE.”

Healey Twyman Eakes remembered their long history.
“I have no words! 34 years at Bayside—you were a student, you married ‘my player,’ you were my friend and my protector! Coach White, Coach Blanco, Jon… I am heartbroken! I promise to take care of your family just like you have taken care of mine. I love you!”

Brian Smith, a former player, called him a true gentleman.
“Jon was my middle linebacker at Bayside from my freshman year to my senior year. Absolutely one of the finest gentlemen I had the pleasure of playing with. Always squared away and honest to a fault. A great man. The world is less without him. May God bless his family and light a path for them through this dark hour.”

Courtney Grace DeWitt recalled his warmth from afar.
“I had the pleasure of speaking with Jon when he spoke to my husband who was the Kellam HS coach. Jon was my FAVORITE coach whom my husband spoke to and there were a lot over 20 years. I was saddened to hear of his passing. He was the warmest coach and he would speak to me which was so nice. God bless you kind man and your family!”

Coach White’s influence stretched far beyond the gridiron. He began his career as a student at Bayside and established a 34-year legacy there.
Many recall how he married one of his own, someone close to the program, as Healey Twyman Eakes noted when she called Jon White’s wife “my player.” This personal connection made him even more embedded in the school’s family.
The outpouring of love demonstrates the profound impact he had on lives. Former players credit him with teaching discipline, honesty, and resilience. Rival coaches admired his kindness and approachability. The entire Hampton Roads area feels the void.
As the community grieves, thoughts turn to Jon White’s wife and sons. They face an unimaginable loss. Friends promise to rally around them, honoring the care Jon always showed others.
His legacy as a devoted husband, father, and leader will live on through the Marlins and the many people he inspired.
Rest in peace, Coach White. Bayside will never forget you.
