A video circulating on Facebook has sparked a heated debate among Bell Gardens residents after police were called on a group of kids riding their bikes at Ford Park.
The clip, originally posted by Bell Gardens Uncensored, has since gathered over 17,000 views and nearly 89 comments as community members weigh in on both sides of the issue.
The video captures a tense exchange between a woman and a Bell Gardens police officer. According to the officer on the scene, police responded after receiving a complaint that the kids were harassing people in the park.
However, the mother who filmed the video tells a different story, saying her son and his friends were simply doing what kids do, riding their bikes and playing outside.
A Mother Reaches Her Breaking Point
The original caption posted alongside the video left little doubt about how the mother felt. She expressed deep frustration over what she described as repeated police contact with children who were just being kids.
She called on parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and the wider Bell Gardens community to gather at Ford Park for a barbecue and cookout so their boys could play freely in a space where they felt welcomed and safe.
Amber Lauren Chavez, who identified herself in the comments as the woman in the video, clarified her position directly. She wrote,
“This is my video thanks for sharing to help spread awareness!!!! So let me be clear my son has only gotten in trouble…”

Her comment was edited, suggesting she had more to add as the conversation grew.
Her frustration touched a nerve with many parents in the area who feel that children in Bell Gardens lack access to truly safe recreational spaces, and that when they do use public parks, they are treated as suspects rather than community members.
The Community Responds
The comment section quickly filled up with strong opinions from all sides. Some residents backed the mother fully.
Anthony Vera wrote, “Cops show up for ANYTHING but real crimes,” reflecting a sentiment shared by others who felt police resources were being misused.
Ann Telles offered a more measured take, stating,
“Yes we do not condone these kids ridding there bikes in the streets but whenever these kids get stopped it’s always in the park.”

Others placed the responsibility squarely on parents. Jenn Nnej commented,
“We all have seen this new bike problem. Parents need to be responsible.”

Debra Woolery Belisle-Putnam was more pointed, writing,
“Teach your kids better. Just because they are kids is no excuse for bad manners, or rude, disrespectful, harassing behavior.”

The helmet question also came up more than once. Chris Smith asked, “Wait so they can afford a bike but not a helmet?” while Oswaldo Picon countered,
“A bike costs significantly more than a helmet.”

Rogelio Fernando Baeza acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting,
“She has a point. But she lost control of her emotions.”

As of now, neither the Bell Gardens Police Department nor park staff has issued a public statement regarding the incident.
The video continues to spread across local Facebook pages, keeping the conversation alive among residents who say this is far from the first time something like this has happened in their community.
