Thomas “Coach Tom” Travis, the former head football coach of the Hickman High School Kewpies in Columbia, Missouri, passed away on May 6, 2026, in Melissa, Texas. He was 86 years old.

Travis was born on March 22, 1940, in Centralia, Missouri, to Tommy and Margaret Travis.

He married Marilyn June McKenzie on December 28, 1963, and the two spent decades together building a life around family, friends, and the school communities Travis served.

A Coaching Career That Shaped Generations

Travis began his teaching and coaching career in Missouri, working at Lafayette and Marceline schools before taking the head coaching job at Hickman High School, a position he held from 1972 to 1992.

His most celebrated achievement came in 1974, when he led the Kewpies to a state championship. But those who knew him say his true legacy was built off the field, through the discipline, character, and lasting relationships he instilled in his players.

In 1995, Travis was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to athletics and the impact he had on young people throughout his career.

Friends and former players often noted that while he valued his accolades, nothing meant more to him than watching his athletes grow into men, both on the field and in life.

After leaving Missouri, Travis continued coaching in Texas before retiring. His retirement years were filled with golf, storytelling, and time spent with loved ones.

Family and Community Remember His Legacy

Travis was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his parents, Tommy and Margaret; and his brother, Jerry. He is survived by his daughter, Stacey Laine, along with extended family and the many students, players, and coaches whose lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 6, 2026, at Fenton-Kendrick Funeral Home in Centralia, Missouri. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., followed by services at 11 a.m., both Central time.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Rachael’s Rescues, P.O. Box 534, Anna, TX 75409.

Coach Travis is remembered by former players and colleagues as a mentor whose influence extended far beyond football, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and compassion that continues to inspire those who knew him.
