The Depew community and beyond are mourning the loss of Paul Gagliardi, a beloved former guidance counselor, dedicated sports official, and cherished family man.

Paul passed away on August 25, 2025, at the age of 89, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service, kindness, and influence that touched the lives of several people.

His contributions to education, sports, and his community will not be forgotten, and his induction into the Section VI Hall of Fame this December is evidence of his enduring impact.

A Life of Dedication

Born on November 25, 1940, to Ermanno and Flavia Gagliardi, Paul L. Gagliardi grew up in Depew, New York, alongside his brother Carl.

From an early age, Paul exhibited a passion for helping others, a trait that would define his career and personal life.

He served as a guidance counselor at Depew High School, where he became a trusted mentor and advocate for students.

His warm demeanor and genuine care made him a beloved figure in the school, guiding generations of young people toward their futures.

Beyond the classroom, Paul was deeply involved in the Teachers Union, advocating for educators and fostering a supportive environment for his colleagues.

His commitment to education was matched by his love for sports, particularly high school football and girls’ basketball.

For over 50 years, Paul served as a NYSPHSAA official, earning respect for his fairness, professionalism, and enthusiasm.

His dedication to sports officiating has earned him a posthumous induction into the Section VI Hall of Fame in December 2025, a fitting tribute to his decades of service.

A Respected Referee and Mentor

Paul’s work as a referee began in 1969, and his presence on the field was unforgettable.

David Ederer, in a Facebook post, shared a photo of Paul refereeing a game, noting that even early in his career, Paul had already been officiating for 14 years.

David recalled watching Paul’s final game a few years ago at the Depew-Lancaster matchup, highlighting his remarkable tenure. David wrote,

“I never had him as a counselor at Depew, but I knew him and knew he was respected and was known for his happy disposition,

His final months were spent at his cherished cabin, where he enjoyed quality time with his loved ones, creating precious memories.

Paul was preceded in death by his daughter Lisa Gagliardi and his parents, Ermanno and Flavia.

His family expressed gratitude for the care provided by Hospice Buffalo, Inc., and Roswell Park, acknowledging the support that allowed Paul to spend his final days in comfort.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Fourteen Holy Helpers Church, located at 1345 Indian Church Road, West Seneca.
