The tragic loss of Hunter Reed, a 17-year-old standout student-athlete from McIntosh High School in Alabama, has left his family, friends, and community heartbroken.
Hunter passed away on January 6, 2025, following a shooting at a house party in McIntosh, just hours after playing in what would be his final basketball game.
His parents, Brooks and Kelly Reed, along with his siblings and other family, are now facing an unimaginable grief while cherishing the vibrant life he lived.
Hunter was born on December 16, 2008, to Brooks and Kelly Reed in McIntosh, Alabama, where he grew up surrounded by love and support.
He was raised alongside his brothers, Brooks Reed Jr. and Taten, and his sisters, Lulu and Aryiah.
From a young age, Hunter embodied the qualities that made him so special, kindness, respect, and an infectious enthusiasm for life.
His principal, Jamelle Sauls, captured the sentiment shared by many when she said, “If all of my students were like Hunter Reed, the world would be a better place.”
He was known for never getting into trouble and for always carrying himself with an all-around mannerable spirit that endeared him to teachers, peers, and coaches alike.
At McIntosh High School, Hunter was an honor roll student in the 11th grade and a dedicated three-sport athlete.
Standing at 6’1″, he played varsity basketball, football, and baseball, showcasing his passion for sports, teamwork, and competition.
He was set to graduate with the class of 2027, and his coaches and teammates often spoke of his energy on the court and field.
On January 6, 2025, he had just finished a strong performance in a basketball game, grabbing rebounds, scoring points, and leaving everyone excited for what was ahead.
His father, Brooks, was there to celebrate with him afterward, sharing in the joy of the moment.
Beyond athletics and academics, Hunter had a deep love for the outdoors.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, finding peace and connection in nature away from daily routines.
He was also a devoted animal lover, particularly fond of caring for his chickens with genuine enthusiasm.
Those who knew him best described him as someone whose bright spirit and kind nature touched everyone around him.
Friends and family often said that if the world had more people like Hunter, it would truly be a better place.
The circumstances of Hunter’s death remain painful and unresolved for many.
According to reports from the McIntosh Police Department, the incident occurred at a home on Topton Road around 10:15 p.m. on January 6, 2025.
Hunter’s 20-year-old cousin, Justin Ronald Reed, allegedly shot him in the stomach.
Police responded quickly, and first aid was administered on scene, where Hunter was initially able to speak. He was revived briefly, but tragically did not survive.
Justin Reed turned himself in around 2:30 a.m. the next morning and was charged with manslaughter; he was already out on a $30,000 bond at the time.
Many questions about what led to the shooting and other details continue to linger, leaving the community seeking answers amid their sorrow.

Upon the tragedy, McIntosh High School canceled its basketball game the following evening out of respect for Hunter and his loved ones.

A wake to honor Hunter’s life is scheduled for Friday, January 9, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Freeman Funeral Home.
Visitation will follow on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Reed’s Chapel Baptist Church, leading into the funeral service at 2:00 PM. Bro. Chad Orso, Bro. Clevon Weaver, and Bro. Matt Rivers will officiate, with burial to follow at Reed’s Chapel Cemetery.
