The Tuscaloosa community mourns Rafael Pinedo, a beloved coach and Army veteran, who died at 51 on October 16, 2025, after battling stage 4 cancer.

Born on March 27, 1974, in San Diego, California, Rafael grew up with a passion for sports that shaped his life.
In his youth, he played football, baseball, and wrestled for Hilltop High School. That love for athletics never faded.
After moving to Tuscaloosa in 2020, he became an assistant coach for football and baseball at Holy Spirit Catholic High School.
He poured his heart into mentoring young athletes, treating them like his own children. His motto, “On the Line Gentleman,” became a rallying cry for the team, and it lives on in the hearts of those he coached.
Rafael served his country with honor as an infantryman in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged as a Specialist, last serving in the 1st Combined Arms Battalion.
He carried the name of a fallen Marine on his wrist as a symbol of his pride and dedication.
His military service reflected the same courage he showed in every part of his life. “This We’ll Defend” was more than a motto for him—it was a way of living.

At the age of 12, Rafael met his future wife, Duschka Castorena Pinedo. What started as a childhood friendship blossomed into a deep, lifelong love. They shared 16 years of marriage, built on faith and mutual support.
Together, they raised three children: Christian, Rafael Jr., and Duschka. Rafael was a devoted husband and father, always putting his family first. His home was a place of warmth, where friends became family, and everyone felt welcome.
Last year, Rafael began facing health challenges that led to a devastating diagnosis of terminal cancer.
True to his character, he fought with strength, determination, and deep faith. Even in his final days, while in hospice care at home, he found joy in visits from family, friends, and the players he mentored.
His wife Duschka showed incredible grace by keeping their home open to all who wanted to say goodbye.
As she put it, Rafael loved his family and “his boys,” and denying him that happiness was not an option.
Before his passing, a GoFundMe campaign was set up by Gabby Rubalcava to help cover funeral and related expenses.
The goal was $24,000, allowing the family to focus on honoring his legacy without financial worry.
Rafael, a proud veteran, had made deep connections in Tuscaloosa through his work at the VA, his church, and the school.
He embraced southern hospitality and became a true part of the community. Known for his big heart, friendly spirit, and love of life, he could light up any room with a joke or a word of encouragement.
A die-hard sports fan, he cheered for the LA Chargers, San Diego Padres, and his adopted Alabama Crimson Tide—Roll Tide!
