Erica Neal, an entrepreneur and the proud mother of a 10-year-old basketball standout, took to her social media to share a powerful message following a recent youth basketball game that went far beyond the final score.
While the scoreboard showed a 35–2 loss, Erica made it clear that the numbers failed to capture what truly happened on the court.
Her daughter’s team, made up of 10-year-old girls from Burleson, Texas, entered the matchup after winning all of their previous games, only to face their toughest challenge yet.
Their opponents were older, taller, and more physically developed, easily 12 years old and built in a way that made the size difference impossible to ignore.
They towered over the younger team, moved with confidence, stole the ball with ease, and finished plays effortlessly around the basket.
Still, Erica emphasized that the real story had nothing to do with height, age, or the final score.
Throughout the game, her daughter and her teammates never lowered their heads, never stopped listening to their coach, and never quit on themselves or each other. Despite the adversity, they continued to compete, defend, hustle, and fight until the final whistle.
Erica shared how proud she was of her daughter’s effort, noting that even while trailing, her child stayed locked in defensively and refused to let up on the player she was guarding.
“They towered over us. Stole the ball like it was nothing. Hit underhand layups without breaking a sweat. But here’s what the scoreboard didn’t show: Not once did our girls hang their heads. Not once did they stop listening to their coach. Not once did they quit on themselves, or each other! They showed grit. They showed heart. They Showed character. And that’s what actually wins in the long game.”
