Born in Manila, Yulo was raised in Leveriza Street, Malate, near the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Thus, most of his childhood was spent watching the Philippines’ top gymnasts training.

Education

First, Yulo was enrolled in the Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School in Malina, where he completed his primary education.

Alongside, he commenced his gymnastics training at the Philippine National Games.

During his tenure, he stood as a member of the National Capital Region’s gymnastics team.

He got free training during his tenure and also got the chance to attend Adamson University in Ermita.

Yulo commenced early with his work at the age of seven. It all started the day when his grandfather Rodrigo Frisco saw him doing somersaults in the playground.

Before it, he used to do acrobatics with his friends in the Paraiso ng Batang Maynila, a playground and park near the Manila Zoo.

In addition to that, his grandfather admitted Yulo to the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP). Following it, he was also provided free training by Philippine Sports Commission at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Likewise, he commenced his game participation in 2008 as a part of the National Capital Region’s gymnastics team.

However, during his first years, he didn’t win any titles until 2011. The years of practice were fruiting in 2011 when he claimed four gold medals alone in the 2011 Palarong Pambansa.

At the same time, he also gained gold in the 2011 Philippine National Games.

Meanwhile, Japan sent coach Munehiro Kugimiya to train Filipino gymnasts as a friendly gesture. He was quite impressed with Yulo and believed in his skills back then.

Therefore, Kugimiya offered him a chance to train in Japan; however, Yulo was sixteen.

Innocently, he replied to ask his parents first. Later, he moved to Japan with his parent’s consent and commenced his training.

As always, the training didn’t come up easily, and Yulo didn’t give up.

Similarly, Yulo garnered the limelight the next year after claiming gold for the parallel bars at the 14th Junior Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

Carlos Yulo | Professional Career

At the age of 18, Carlos Yulo entered the senior league games through the 2018 Gymnastics World Cup series.

He was liked for his Melbourne, Baku, Doha, and Cottbus events during his tenure. Right after it, he partook in the 2018 Asian Games.

Similarly, he was then seen at the 2018 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha. Overall, he took the bronze medal home in the floor exercise.

Additionally, he secured direct qualification to compete for the Philippines at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Yulo became the second Filipino qualifier in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after pole vaulter EJ Obiena.

As the Phillippine’s flag bearer, he claimed two bronzes in the 2020 All-Japan Gymnastics Championships Sunday at Takasaki Arena.

He stood behind Japanese gymnasts Hidenobu Yonekura and Keisuke Asato in the vault during the event.

In the meantime, he again fell behind Kazuki Minami and Ryosuke Doi in the floor exercise. Overall, he finished eighth in the men’s all-around, scoring 170.032 points.

Following it, he became one of four Filipinos who qualified for the coronavirus-postponed Tokyo Olympics.

In 2022, The 51st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2022 were held in Liverpool, England, on Friday, November 4, and Carlos Yulo showcased his versatility by placing eighth in the all-around competition (early Saturday in Manila).

Yulo, 24, relied on his floor exercise and parallel bars routines to finish with 82.098 points, falling short of gold medalist Daiki Hashimoto, the reigning Olympic champion, who scored an astounding 87.198 points.

They placed 23rd in 2018 and 10th in the 2019 edition.

After winning silver in the individual all-around at the 2022 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha, he won gold on the floor exercise to win his first-ever Asian Championship title. He then won gold in the parallel bars and vault competitions.

He also competed at the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and bagged a silver in vault and bronze in parallel bars.

At the Tokyo Olympics, as Yulo practiced his triple-back and double-forward sequence, he injured his hip.

Following it, many news circulated stating that he wouldn’t partake in the Tokyo Olympics. 

Altogether, Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Cynthia Carrion revealed that Carlos is doing quite well, and the injury was a minor one.
