Carnell Tate, a freshman wide receiver for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, has recently faced a heartbreaking tragedy as his mother was the victim of a drive-by shooting.
Unfortunately, on Sunday, July 16, 2023, a tragic incident occurred as Carnell’s mother, 41-year-old Ashley Griggs, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago.
According to the report, no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Following the devastating news, Carnell’s 7-on-7 team, South Florida Express, expressed their condolences via Twitter.
Throughout his football journey, Carnell had his mother, Ashley Griggs, by his side, and he shared that she had a significant impact on his career choices.
Furthermore, their relationship has played an important role in his life as a college player.
Ashley Griggs Cause Of Death And Obituary
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim of an overnight drive-by shooting in the Garfield Park neighborhood as Ashley Griggs.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the 4000 block of West Washington Boulevard.
When the police arrived at the scene, they discovered Ashley Griggs with multiple gunshot wounds.
Four other individuals were also injured in the shooting and were transported to nearby hospitals, where they were reported to be in fair condition.
Ashley Griggs was survived by her son, Carnell, and his three siblings named Re’asia, Re’niyah, and Akayla, and her husband, Sean Tate.
The family resided in Chicago, Illinois, and were known for their strong bond and mutual support.
The player and his family have received an outpouring of condolences and support from numerous individuals and fans during this challenging period.
Carnell Tate’s Mother Helped Him In His College Decision
Carnell Tate attended Marist High School in Chicago and later transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, during his junior year of high school.
He gained recognition as a top-25 prospect nationally before ultimately choosing Ohio State.
Prior to becoming a member of the Buckeyes football team, Carnell seriously contemplated signing with Notre Dame, which was influenced by his mother.
After visiting multiple schools, both Carnell Tate and his mother, after careful consideration, decided that Ohio State University would be the best choice for him.
In December 2022, he solidified his commitment by signing his National Letter of Intent with the Buckeyes.
Following that, he officially enrolled at the university in January 2023.
Since then, Carnell has actively participated in spring drills, getting involved in the football program, and preparing for his future as a player.
