Coach Bernard K. Von Wald, 90, Passed Away, Leaving Behind His Extended Family And An Entire Minnesota Community!

Coach Bernard K. Von Wald, a beloved teacher, coach, and athletic director at Harding High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away on October 10, 2025, at the age of 90.

He passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Bernard K. Von Wald Was Both a Player And a Coach!

Bernard K. Von Wald, often called Bernie, was born on December 29, 1934.

He dedicated his life to athletics and education, leaving a lasting legacy in Minnesota’s sports scene.

A standout athlete in his youth, he played football at the University of Minnesota and later served in the U.S. Army before beginning his teaching and coaching career.

At Harding High School in St. Paul, he became a revered figure, coaching football, wrestling, and track, and eventually serving as the athletic director.

Moreover, he was inducted into the Minnesota State High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the Harding High School Hall of Fame.

He was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, a devoted supporter of the Minnesota Vikings, and a proud advocate for the Golden Gophers.

Regarding his family, Coach Bernard was married to Randene “Randy” Helen (Schiotz) for nearly 68 years. Together, they raised a large and loving family.

Bernie is survived by his wife, children, Kristi Stout, Duke Von Wald, Stacey Von Wald, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

On the other hand, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Esther Von Wald.

Following his passing, many recall his leadership, mentorship, and dedication to Harding High School athletics.

Former students have described him as a “pillar of strength” and “a coach who cared as much about character as competition.”

One of his former students mentioned him as a great teacher, writing:

So sorry to hear that Mr. Von Wald has passed away. He was a great teacher and person.

Regarding the memorial services, Wald’s visitation will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home.

Likewise, the celebration of life will take place the following day, Friday, October 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.
