David Boyd, a former high school basketball coach from Georgia, is highly respected in the sporting circle.

Boyd, the eldest among three sons, grew up in Georgia. Additionally, he actively participated in basketball and football at Campbell High School.

Ultimately, choosing to pursue a career in coaching, he won his first state championship in 1982 with Campbell.

Title after title followed, setting the benchmark for Georgia basketball, which is far from being matched.

Unfortunately, David passed away in January 2024, leaving basketball fans in mourning.

David Boyd Obituary And Death Cause

Boyd died due to heart failure at the age of 69 in his home in Georgia, in the presence of his family members.

Notably, he had been struggling with Type-1 Diabetes for a long time. Ultimately, the disease led to heart failure, bringing about the coach’s demise.

Additionally, he is survived by his wife Genise, brother Cal, and four children—Charisse, Geoff, Christina, and Wesley.

His legacy in coaching is now carried by his brother Cal, the head coach at Mt. Bethel in Georgia.

However, the void David has left behind in Georgia basketball will be impossible to fill.

Winning title after title and setting examples for discipline and lifestyle, he was the heart and soul of his teams.

Tribute Messages

Perhaps a mark of his greatness, David’s death was met with great sorrow and disappointment by sporting fans.

Tributes for the legendary coach and messages of solidarity for his family have flooded social media.

His brother Cal announced his passing on X with an emotional caption reminiscing his contributions to the family and basketball.

“My Big Brother David Boyd went to be with the Lord today. He was a great mentor to so many. The coaching world lost a legend today! I am grateful for all of our conversations over the years. I already miss my brother very much!”

A two-time state championship-winning coach in his own right, Cal shared a special bond with the late David.

A coaching-brothers duo is as rare as they come in basketball. Needless to say, having a big brother like David to learn off from had certainly helped Cal in his endeavors.

Opting to signify his winning mentality and killer instinct, the current Georgia State Jonas Hayes coach also shared kind messages.

“He’s an unbelievable coach and disciplinarian. And he is the definition of a winner.”

Furthermore, former player under Boyd and current Kell High School HC Jermaine Sellers brought David’s personality traits to light.

“He talked about work ethic, accountability, good character, and how to treat people. Throughout my coaching career, he has always touched base with me and given me advice, encouraging me.”

Undoubtedly, David was a legendary coach with unrivaled achievements. But above that, he was also an exemplary figure for his family and the players who played under him.
