David Wolf | Early Life

David Wolf was born on 15 September 1989 in Düsseldorf, West Germany, under the star sign of Virgo. Unfortunately, there are not many details on his early life, family background, education, and so on. 

Well, what is known is that he is a second-generation hockey player.

Father, Manfred Wolf 

As a matter of fact, his Father, Manfred Wolf, also used to be an ice hockey player. Although Manfred was born in Canada, he played for Germany professionally. 

During Manfred’s tenure, he represented West Germany twice at the Winter Olympics. Additionally, Manfred was one of the first of a wave of Canadian-born and trained players.

However, he later emigrated to the Bundesliga by Heinz Weisenbach and then gained German citizenship. Initially, he played 15 seasons in Mannheim, Dusseldorf, and Frankfurt.

Moving on, Manfred gained his foremost international play for Olympics in 1984 in Sarajevo. Four years later, he then played in Calgary, the 1984 Canada Cup. 

After several World Championships and games, he retired and later ran a hockey school for six years. Later, he commenced coaching for the IceFighters, a Third division Oberliga East team. 

David’s Amateur Journey 

As a matter of fact, David Wolf did gain an interest in ice hockey from his dad, and hence, he was involved in it since his early days.

Furthermore, Manfred (his father) explained that David initially commenced his journey through the practice of Fischer Price roller skates. 

As David’s passion grew, his father slowly bought him all the necessities like elbow pads, knee pads, and many more. Later, he also attended his father’s hockey school, whereas, per his father, he would often fall asleep on the bench. 

After years of his gameplay, David earned a one-year, two-way contract from the Flames.

David Wolf | Career 

After several seasons in his amateur period, David Wolf played his first professional season in 2007. Well, he first hopped in for ETC Crimmitschau in the 2nd Bundesliga, the second level of German hockey.

Back then, he played a total of 46 games with the team and also maintained a 9-point season. Following it, he returned back to ETC Crimmitschau and played 36 games in total. 

During those games, he posted eight points and recorded 120 penalty minutes. In the meantime, in 2009, David became a part of the German national junior team.

With them, he appeared at the 2009 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. During the tournament, he maintained 53 penalty minutes in six games. 

The following season, David joined the Hannover Scorpions of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Well, he stayed on the team for two seasons before moving to play with the Hamburg Freezers in 2011.

Again, he played 46 games with them, among which he scored 35 points as Hamburg’s top line. All those years, he led the DEL with 167 penalty minutes.

American Hockey League

A year later, Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League (NHL) offered him a trout in the 2012 summer camp; however, he didn’t stick with the team. 

Therewith, he continued playing with the Hamburg Freezers and then scored a career-high 17 goals and added 19 assists. The following year, he improved with 40 points and 152 minutes in penalties.

Right after that, he had a failed attempt at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Later, he stated his wish to enter the NHL and hence signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Calgary Flames. 

Not long after it, the NHL then moved him to the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. With that league, he starred alongside the Adirondack Flames.

Indeed, he had a fine start with the team as he posted 12 goals and added nine assists in his first 35 games. 

NHL Debut and The Return

It was only back on 26 January 2015, when David Wolf first earned his NHL call from the Calgary Flames. Moving on, he gained his debut through a victory over the Edmonton Oilers. 

Although it did come off with a good start, the goodness didn’t continue much. Right after, David Wolf struggled with a laceration to his thigh and then missed three of the following games. 

Afterward, David refused all the offers to be in the American League and thus, returned back to Germany. Herewith, he was again together with the Hamburg Freezers. 

Not long after that, Hamburg traded him to the fellow DEL side Adler Mannheim, where he signed a seven-year contract with the organization. 

2018 Winter Olympics

Although David’s first attempt at Winter Olympics was a failure. He took that as a lesson and tried to improve his performance by making it to the Men’s Play-offs semi-finals in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics at Gangneung Hockey Centre on February 23.
