However, at Kilgore College in Texas, he averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, boasting an 84.2% free-throw accuracy.

In November, he hit a career-high 33 points in a 40-minute game and closed the season with 26 and 20 points.

As a freshman, he maintained an 11.3 points per game average, shooting at an impressive 50 percent.

Hence, he played a pivotal role in guiding the Kilgore team to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA tournament.

Thomas’ recruitment gained momentum after the JA 48 event, a junior college All-Star game held in Las Vegas during the summer.

He received offers from West Virginia, Kansas State, Texas A&M, Arizona State, Memphis, and more before deciding on the Bearcats.

Cincinnati Bearcats’ point guard DaVeon Thomas excelled in his team debut, securing a season-opening victory against the Illinois-Chicago Flames.

Thomas Was Discovered By Coach McCoy

During the COVID-19 pandemic, McCoy, an assistant basketball coach for Kilgore Community College, discovered Thomas’ highlights online.

In The Bash tournament, McCoy observed Ridge View, Thomas’ school, competing against Arizona Compass, a leading prep-school basketball team.

He noticed that Thomas defensively contained TyTy Washington Jr., a top-15, five-star prospect in the 2021 class, limiting him to 5-for-12 shooting for 14 points.

Witnessing Thomas make a top prospect miserable with his defense captivated him with an appreciation for Thomas’ skills.

With no recruitment offers after high school, Thomas connected with Cody, leading him to choose the junior college route with Kilgore, a strategic decision.

McCoy had him in the gym daily, perfecting his jump shot and speed variation, teaching how to leverage pace against tougher opponents.

While talking about Thomas, McCoy said. “He’s the type of very competitive guard you have to have to win at a high level. There aren’t many who work as hard as he does.”
