Derek Drouin: Early Life & Parents 

The famous high jump competitor, Derek Drouin, was born on 6 March 1990 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.

He was born to Sheila (née Teschke) and Gaetan Drouin being the only son in the family. The Drouin family also has two daughters, Jillian Drouin and Alysha Drouin.

Similar to his interest, Drouin’s sister, Jullian, is also an international competition for Canada. 

At a young age of going to kindergarten, Drouin first learned to high jump when his teacher introduced the sport to the class. 

After being familiar with the sport, with curiosity and anticipation, Drouin went home, and with the help of broom over two speakers, he began leaping over it. 

Thus, this marked his beginning in the sport, which would open his door to achievements and success. 

At the age of nine, he began running track, and by the age of fifteen, he began his training in the high jump. 

Later, in 2013, Derek Drouin went to Indiana University and graduated with a degree in Kinesiology.

Drouin first got familiar with the high jump during his days in kindergarten. In 2009, he achieved his first-ever international success after victory over the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships in the high jump.

He won the championship for Canada with a record of clearing 2.27 m. After the international exposure, he went into future competitions. 

Derek Drouin competed in the NCAA with the Indiana Hoosiers track team. He won the NCAA championship in the high jump, making him the first Hoosier athlete to win the championship. 

After his first achievement in the NCAA championship, he became the first athlete to win 5 NCAA in the high jump in the NCAA history. 

However, in the 2012 Summer Olympics, which took place in London, England, he won the Bronze medal with a jump of 2.29 meters.

The World Championships of 2013

The 2013 World Championships in Athletics took place in Moscow. The championship was the next major challenge for Derek Drouin. 

In the games, Drouin was unable to achieve 2.41 m. However, he was in the bronze competition with a personal best and a national record of 2.38 m. 

After the World Champions, Derek Drouin dedicated his time to improving and putting effort into his performance. 

On September 4, 2013, he won his first major international title after the World Champions in the 7th edition of the Francophone Games in Nice, France. 

Despite the clearance of a 2.30 m high jump performed by three men, Drouin was able to take away the victory with his perfect first attempt at it.

Derek Drouin enhanced his performance reaching new heights and breaking records in the following outdoor season with hard work and training. 

In 2014, he improved his Canadian jumping with a record of 2.40 at the Drake Relays event in Des Moines, United States. 

In a competition on April 25, Drouin cleared his first eight heights on his first attempt, winning at 2.38m.

Similarly, he cleared the 2.40 jump on his third attempt to set a new Canadian record. The record made him the tenth man in the world to jump 2.40 or higher outdoors. 

In the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Drouin won the gold medal with a jump of 2.31m. However, he failed to clear a jump of 2.37 on his later attempt to set the Commonwealth Games record. 

2015 Pan Am & World Champion

The 2015 season was filled with opportunities for Derek Drouin with participation in two big events: Pan American Games in Toronto and the World Championships in Athletics. 

The Pan American Games took place in his hometown, and he won the gold medal.

After the victory, Drouin commented that the last two meets were his season bests, and he was glad he didn’t waste such an opportunity in front of the supporting crowd. 

Derek Drouin reached the finals in a four-way jumpoff in the World Championships with a cleared 2.33 m jump. However, despite the hard work, he was unable to make it to the 2.36 m jump.

He did manage to clear a 2.35 m jump on his first try leading him to secure his world title. After his victory, Derek Drouin talked about his frustration and patience, which helped to earned the world title. 

Olympic Gold 

After years of hard work and patience, Derek Drouin accelerated his career in the 2016 Summer Olympics. 

In the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Drouin jumped his season’s best height of 2.38 meters.

With such a record, he won the gold medal and defeated his opponents, Barshim and Bondarenko. 

He succeeded in clearing all of the heights on his first attempt; however, he could not complete the 2.40 m jump while going for the Olympic record. 

With such achievement, he became the first Canadian male to win a gold medal, and it was the second medal won by a Canadian male athlete.

The gold medal won by Derek Drouin was Canada’s third gold medal during the Rio de Janeiro games. 

Similarly, he was the first Canadian to win the gold medal in field sports after Duncan McNaughton in the 1932 Summer Olympics.

After participating in the 2016 Rio Olympics, Duicon dedicated his time and training for Decathlon for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Olympic champ Derek Drouin withdraws from the Tokyo 2020 trials. 

The high jump champ, Derek Drouin, announced his social media on 25th June, Friday, addressing that he would be withdrawing from the trials. 

Drouin further highlighted that he has not properly recovered from the European athletics season.

In the recent years, he struggled with many injuries, including a serious spinal condition that required surgery along with three Achilles tendon tears. 

“My body isn’t ready, but I take comfort in knowing that we did absolutely everything in our power to get on that ‘start line.’ Sometimes things don’t work out.” Derek wrote on Instagram 

“I don’t know what the end of this Olympic qualifying period is going to look like,” he’d said. “But right now, I can say that I’m really, really happy that I’m trying.”

Although the reigning Olympic champ cannot participate, all his supporters worldwide are hoping for his fast recovery and presence soon.
