Furthermore, Derek has recorded over 10 PPG average during multiple seasons, becoming one of the greatest defenders and scorers of all time. Harper’s best season was during the 1990-1991 season, where he recorded an average of 19.7 PPG.

However, even after his exceptional record, he still didn’t make it to the All-Star team, and Dallas ended the year with only a 28-54 record. Nonetheless, Derek even played well for the rest of his term in Dallas, but the team was dreadful at the time.

Likewise, during the 1992-1993 season, the Mavericks finished with an 11-71 score, one of their worst records to date. Derek spent two more seasons with the Dallas Mavericks before departing the team during the 1993-1994 season.

New York Knicks

The Dallas Mavericks traded Derek to New York Knicks, where he was reunited with Rolando Blackman. The trade took place after the 28 games during the 1993-1994 season.

The Knicks selected Derek to replace the defensive point guard, Doc Rivers, as he was injured and sidelined for the rest of the season.

The trade sent Harper from the team with a score of 13–69 to the team that won the 1994 NBA Championship, where he was an integral part.

Moreover, Harper’s stats descended as he had to adjust to not having an individual role in the team.

However, Derek’s best season while representing New York Knicks was during the last year he played for the Knicks. During that season, Harper had an average of 14.0 PPG.

Thus, the New York Knicks released Derek on July 14, 1996. After his release, Harper became a free agent in the NBA.

Return To Dallas

Orlando Magic

Furthermore, after Derek’s second stint with the Mavericks, they traded Harper and Ed O’Bannon to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Dennis Scott and some cash.

With the Orlando Magic, Harper played for one season. However, his score and overall play dropped off, but Derek was still a reliable bench player.

At the time, the Orlando Magic’s had a decent set of rosters, but the team members were mostly old.

Around 16 out of the team’s 22 players were 30 years old or even older than 30 years. Derek was one of the more senior players on the team. At the time, he was 36 years old.

Moreover, the team recorded an average record of 41-41 but missed the playoffs. Thus, Derek’s contract with the Orlando Magic expired during the 1998 offseason, and he left the team.

Los Angeles Lakers

After the contract expiration with the Orlando Magic, Derek signed with the Los Angeles Laker as a free agent.

At the time Lakers were a reliable team and were led by great players like Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

The team made it to the playoffs, and it was the first time Harper had reached the playoffs since 1996 with the Knicks.

The Lakers made it to the second round but got swept by the San Antonio Spurs. This would be the final year of Harper’s career.

The Lakers reached the playoffs for the 1999 season, which was the first time Derek entered the playoffs since 1996 while representing New York Knicks.

The 1999 NBA season was the last season for Harper as a professional basketball player.
