Erik Van Rooyen was born on 21 February, 1990 to Wim Van Rooyen and Elize Van Rooyen in Bellville, South Africa.

Golfer Van attended the University of Minnesota from 2009 to 2013 and achieved victory in the 2012 Minnesota State Amateur during his time there.

In 2013, Rooyen embarked on his professional career and has been competing on the Sunshine Tour ever since.

However, his first victory came in 2017 when he won the Eye of Africa PGA Championship.

He secured his first European Tour title at the Scandinavian Invitation, held at Hills Golf & Sports Club just outside Sweden.

Later, Rooyen achieved success by winning the titles of PGA Tour and World Wide Technology Championship in 2021 and 2023.

Erik Van Rooyen Cancer?

Following his second PGA TOUR title win at the World Wide Technology Championship, Erik van Rooyen received devastating news.

His close friend, who was in remission from cancer, received the heartbreaking news that the disease had returned and spread throughout his body.

Van Rooyen disclosed that his friend had received a prognosis of six to ten weeks and perhaps even less.

He said, “If you look at my ball it has the initials ‘JT’ and it’s for Jon Trasamar, my best friend. He’s got melanoma, and he’s not going to make it.”

Further, he said,” And every shot out there was for him. And when you’re playing for something bigger than some silly trophy it puts things in perspective, and at the end of the day whether I won here or whether I lost here, it really did not matter.”

Rooyen subsequently shared a photo of himself with the trophy, kissing it, along with a caption that read, “For my best friend, Jon.”

Many fans expressed sympathy for Eric, while others were left perplexed about the situation.

Fans lauded Erik, stating, “This is the embodiment of a true friend. He genuinely held back his tears during the game.”

Another fan commented, “Heartbreaking and heroic. Peace to Jon, his family, and friends. The entire Gopher nation is sending our heartfelt prayers.”

Erik And Jon Trasamar Friendship

Van Rooyen initially crossed paths with Trasamar when the former journeyed from South Africa to attend college in Minnesota.

When Van was 19 years old, he departed from his home to study abroad.

Jon and his family resided approximately two hours from Minneapolis, where Van pursued his studies.

Subsequently, Erik and Jon became roommates, teammates, and best friends shortly afterward.

Trasamar even served as the best man at Erik Van’s wedding.

After being best friends for over a decade, hearing the heartbreaking news left Van emotional the entire time.
