He served as an offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints for two years, from 2006.

Syracuse University

Doug started as a coach when he was hired as Syracuse University’s head football coach by Daryl Gross, the athletic director.

Notably, he became the first collegiate player from Syracuse University to run the squad as a head football coach since Ravens H. Baysinger in 1948.

As claimed by sources, Tim Green and Floyd Little, the alumni, were much impressed by him and recommended him for the post.

Also, Green took his interview, and it was discovered that Doug was desperate to get hired as he kept the folder of his high school players in Syracuse.

The Orange started doubling its win every year when the team came into contact with Doug.

He coached the team, which led them to win over Kansas State in the Pinstripe Bowl in New York City.

Moreover, that was the first en route to the Bowl in 2001. He also coached his team to win over the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Buffalo Bills

Doug later on switched his job as a head coach to Buffalo Bills in 2013.  Also, this was the specific time when he nicknamed himself Saint Doug.

He believed that it took two miracles that required him to name himself Saint, one his win at Syracuse, and another his win at Buffalo would qualify as the other.

Everything went well until 2014, except for his contract’s three days out clause. The clause got activated when Bill’s founder and the long-time owner died.

Following that, Doug implemented the clause and decided to quit on December 31, 2014, receiving the full salary of 2015.

Many players expressed dissatisfaction and grief about his resignation from the post.

Those players also included running back Fred Jackson, who commented that someone had punched him in the stomach.

With time, Doug did update his post to fifth head coach in team history.  He led the team to win the  AFC South division championship under his guidance.

Moreover, he headed the team to the second finish in the AFC Championship game, where they lost to New England Patriots in 2017.

Following that, there were seasons when he could not guide his team to the maximum number of wins.

Despite that, Jaguar’s owner Shahid Khan has decided to hang onto him for the 2020 season. During that, Marrone and Jaguars waived Leonard Fournette.

The coach said that the decision to Jaguars departure from Leonard was best for the team, and the decision was made “on the field.”

Furthermore, he also revealed that rushing Leader James Robinson would most likely not finish the regular season with the Jaguars.

Later on January 4, 2021, Shahid Khan announced that Doug would not be retained for the 2021 season and was fired.
