Earl Joseph Watson Jr., also known as Earl Watson, was born in Kansas City, Kansas, the United States, on June 12, 1979.

He was born to Earl Sr. (father) and Estella Watson (mother). Earl’s father was an African-American, and his mother was Mexican-American.

Earl had an average childhood, and his parents gave him the best life. But, including Earl, his parents had seven kids, and their education and daily necessities were very tough for them to look after seven kids.

But the best part is Earl’s parents always motivated him and let him do whatever he wanted to, which helped Earl be the person he is today.

Likewise, he went to Washington High School in his hometown. He even scored an average of 8.3 assists and 23.4 points in his senior year.

After graduating from Kansas High School, he joined UCLA. Even though he loved basketball from an early age, he did not take it seriously until he joined UCLA.

After 1979 Earl and Baron Davis were the first two freshmen to start at UCLA.

With Earl’s magnificent basketball skills, he became one of UCLA’s most preferred and loved players.

At last, he finished his journey in UCLA with an average of 14.7 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds.

Earl Watson: Professional Career

Every basketball player has one dream: to be a part of the NBA, and Earl was no exception. Finally, in 2001 his dream came true, and he got drafted in the 2001 NBA from the SuperSonics.

However, Earl was with Supersonics for only one year; after that, he joined Memphis Grizzles in 2005, but he could not achieve much there, so he joined Denver Nuggets in 2005.

After so many average years, he finally recorded his first-ever triple-double in a game against the Sacramento Kings in 2008 from Oklahoma City Thunder.

Similarly, we can consider 2008 the best year for Earl in terms of his career because, in the same year, he logged 23 points, ten rebounds, and ten assists in just 32 minutes.

It was so special for Watson as it was Seattle’s first triple-double since 2004. However, after 2008 he could not do much in his career rather than joining different teams.

From 2009 to 2014, he became part of different teams like Indiana Pacers, Utah Jazz, and Portland Trail Blazers, but no team could give him enough recognition as he wanted.

So, in 2014, after a series of average games and losses, Watson finally decided to retire from his thirteen-year-long NBA career.

Coaching Career

Even though Watson retired from basketball, he could not stay away from basketball for a long time. So he decided to make a comeback but differently as a coach this time.

First, he became an assistant coach of Austin Spurs, the NBA D-League team. He was in Austin for only a year, and in 2015, he joined Phoenix Sun.

But due to poor performance in the first half of the season, Sun decided to fire their head coach Jeff Hornacek and after Jeff god fired, Sun appointed Watson as their head coach.

Soon after Watson was appointed as the head coach, Suns got their first victory of that season in 2016, and he again won another match against Memphis, the last team he played for.

Due to Watson’s impressive winning streak, Sun again decided to keep him as their head coach for the next season.

With Watson’s appointment as the head coach, he became the second-youngest coach in NBA.

Likewise, he also became the first-ever coach in the NBA of Hispanic descent. At first, Watson improved the Suns'” strategies and their way of playing. After that, he shifted the team’s” focus on defense rather than offense.

Unfortunately, the 2018 season could be good for Watson. Out of three matches, Suns lost all the games and could not win any game, which was the worst record in franchise history.

So, Suns fired Watson in 2018 and hired Jay Triano in his place.

However, Earl did not stop working after being fired from the Suns; he worked as an NBA TV analyst and PAC 12 Network. He worked as an analyst for two years.

And finally, in 2021, Watson again made his comeback as an assistant coach of the Toronto Raptors.

After filing for divorce, Earl wanted full custody of their daughter. But later, Earl had a change of heart, and he took all the charges back and gave them a chance at their wedding.

That did not help, and Earl and Jennifer eventually divorced in 2015.

Now, they are both happy in their own lives and are their daughter’s good co-parents. Later in 2018, there were rumors of Earl dating Joy Taylor and getting engaged.
