The East Peoria community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Justin Daniel Hamilton, a dedicated teacher and coach at East Peoria Community High School.

At just 51 years old, Justin suffered a heart attack while hiking, leaving his family, friends, students, and the entire community heartbroken.

Justin was married to Sara Hamilton and was a devoted father to two beautiful daughters, Sophie and Josie.

The Hamilton family resided in Marquette Heights, where they built a loving home. Justin was born and raised in Pekin, Illinois, and his life was filled with a passion for education and athletics.

He was known for his dedication to mentoring young people and motivating them to reach their full potential.

Justin had five years of experience as a certified personal/group trainer and enjoyed a successful tenure as the head coach of the EPCHS cross-country team.

His dedication to athletics extended beyond cross-country; he also served as the head coach for the Boys’ Track and field team, having recently been promoted to this position in 2023.

His leadership inspired many student-athletes, guiding them toward success both on and off the field.

In addition to his coaching roles, Justin sponsored the chess club at Central Junior High School (CJHS) for six years.

This involvement showcased his commitment to fostering diverse interests among students.

He was also set to launch a Disc Golf Club at EPCHS, further enriching the athletic offerings available to students.

As a teacher, Justin was more than just an instructor; he was a mentor who went above and beyond for his students.

His engaging teaching style and genuine care for each student made him a favorite among many.

He believed in the power of education to transform lives and worked tirelessly to create an environment where every student felt valued and supported.

The East Peoria Community High School Track and Field teams held their inaugural “Trash for Cash” fundraiser on March 2024, during which they cleaned up litter along designated roads.

Coach Justin Hamilton expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative,

“I’ve always wanted to do something more of a service type oriented fundraiser instead of selling products. And so I’ve had trash for cash on my mind for a long time.”

Outside of his professional life, Justin loved spending time with his family and participating in outdoor activities.

His hobbies included disc golfing, mountain biking, and “adventurecizin“—a term he used for outdoor exercises like trail running, hill climbing, and hiking.

He was a nature lover who enjoyed supporting local events and spending quality time with loved ones.

Justin Hamilton’s Life Was Tragically Cut Short, But His Impact on Students, Athletes, And Friends Endures

Following his death, heartfelt tributes have poured in from those whose lives he touched.

During this difficult time, Justin’s father-in-law offered a heartfelt prayer for Sara and their daughters.

A former student student expressed appreciation for Justin’s mentorship and wrote,

‘Dear, Justin Hamilton
Thank you for being apart of my life. For being a great mentor, a parental figure in my youth, and most importantly, an amazing father to 2 beautiful children with hearts of gold.
I’m for sure going to miss your spunky personality and awesome attitude. We need more people in the world like you, however nobody else can compare to you.
My heart is heavy for you today, tomorrow, and in the future. We will truly miss you very much, Justin.
