Eatonville, Washington, is mourning the unexpected death of 16-year-old Axel Stammen, a junior at Eatonville High School.
Axel was an energetic student who excelled in football and basketball, the kind of kid who lit up rooms with his energy and smile.
Though the cause of his passing has not been made public, the pain it has caused through families, friends, and teammates who saw so much promise in his young life.

Axel wore jersey number 11 on the football field and 21 on the basketball hardwood.
As a wide receiver and strong safety for the Eatonville Cruisers football team since 2023, he brought speed and heart to every play.
Just days before his death, on November 5, Axel scored a touchdown in the closing minutes of a hard-fought game against Orting, helping his team fight back in a season-ending loss.
Off the field, he shone as a point guard in basketball, always hustling and uplifting his teammates.
At 5’8″ and full of determination, Axel was a class of 2027 standout, the type of athlete who inspired everyone around him.
His highlights on platforms like Hudl show a player with quick feet and a passion for the game.
The news broke like a thunderclap across the school and town.
Eatonville High School’s cheer team shared the devastating announcement on social media, their words capturing the raw ache felt by so many.
They wrote-:
“Our hearts are incredibly heavy as we mourn the loss of one of our own, Axel Stammen, He was a bright part of our football family, and his absence is felt deeply throughout our entire community. To honor his life and support one another, we invite everyone to join Axel’s candlelight vigil on Sunday, November 9th at 6:00 PM in front of EHS. Let’s come together as a family, lift each other up, and show love to all who are hurting.”

In response, the community has rallied with a call to gather in memory of Axel. The vigil on November 9 at 6:00 p.m. outside Eatonville High School is open to everyone.
Organizers ask attendees to wear cruiser blue, the team’s signature color, as a symbol of unity and solidarity for the Stammen family.
It’s a chance to light candles, share stories, and hold space for the healing that only comes from being together in tough times.

Shaun Garringer, who clearly cherished his time with Axel, remembered him fondly:
