As Egan Arley Bernal Gómez, the champion cyclist was born to father Germán and mother Flor. Egan was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and brought up in Zipaquirá, a small city in Colombia.
Interestingly, there are two surnames in the name of Egan. The name is a Spanish name where his father’s or paternal surname is Bernal, and the family name of his mother’s side is Gómez.

Racing for professional teams at an early age
Not too later, he caught the eyes of professional cycling teams and bagged a contract with them. He was signed by Gianni Savio to Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec, an Italian pro cycling team.

Bad Start in 2022
Bernal didn’t have an excellent start to the year 2022. During a training ride in Gachancipá with his teammates, he hit a passenger bus that was stopped. He reportedly struck the bus at a speed of 50 km/hr(31mph).
Later, his team Ineos Grenadiers released a statement saying Bernal had suffered a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella, chest trauma, a punctured lung, and several rib fractures.
It was a dangerous situation as stated by the doctors of Clinica Universidad de La Sabana. The doctors counted a total of 20 fractures in his body and even warned that Bernal may never be able to return to the tracks. They said he might be paralyzed or even die.
