Elton Tyron Brand was born on March 11, 1979, in Cortlandt Manor, New York. He is the son of Daisy Brand (mother). Unfortunately, his father’s whereabouts are unknown.

Elton Brand | Early Career

Elton Brand went to Peekskill High School and was instantly added to the varsity basketball team. He was rated among the best high school basketball players in the nation, earning the New York State Mr. Basketball title.

Likewise, he became a basketball hero in Peekskill after helping his team win two state titles. His outstanding high school career got him a lot of University offers.

Amongst many, he chose to attend Duke University and played for the college basketball team, Duke.

His basketball skills not only shined within the university but also in the whole nation. As a result, he was awarded the consensus National Player of the Year.

He later opted to leave Duke following his second year and enter the 1999 NBA draft to start his NBA journey.

Professional Career

NBA Career

On June 30, 1999, Elton Brand was drafted first overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1999 NBA draft, thus embarking on his NBA career.

He quickly rose as the core player on the team and was voted the Rookie Challenge’s most valuable player at All-Star Weekend.

Likewise, he was named NBA Rookie of the Year with Houston Rockets player Steve Francis. 

Brand was regarded as the rising star for the new Chicago dynasty for most of the 2000–01 season. But, despite his stellar performance with the team, Elton was traded off to Los Angeles Clippers in June 2001.

However, Brand was a valuable addition to the Clippers and became the first Clippers player to be named on the All-Star team since Danny Manning in 1994.

In 2003, the Miami Heat offered him a six-year contract for $82 million, but the Clippers couldn’t afford Brand to sign with Miami and thus, offered the same deal to keep him as a Clipper.

It was a wise decision since Brand kept on smashing the records. He was named to the 2006 NBA All-Star Game and was a strong contender for the 2006 NBA MVP. He also won the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2005–06 and the Joe Dumars Trophy. 

Furthermore, Brand played for the Philadelphia 76ers for four years, Dallas Mavericks for a year, and Atlanta Hawks for two years before announcing his retirement from professional basketball on August 11, 2015. 

However, on January 4, 2016, Brand stepped out of retirement to re-enter the NBA and re-signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

But, after playing for ten months in NBA, he announced his final retirement on October 20, 2016. 

International Career

Elton Brand has represented the USA in different international tournaments and won several international awards and recognition.

He first represented the USA in the goodwill games held in New York in 1998, where he was able to win the gold medal for the country.

Similarly, Elton won another gold for the USA in FIBA Americas Championship in 1999. He also participated in the same event in 2003, where he was able to win the gold again.

Furthermore, he represented the USA in FIBA World Championship in 2006 and brought home a bronze medal.

After his resignation as a player, Brand was offered the role of Philadelphia 76ers’ player development consultant on December 6, 2016.

Then, he was hired as General Manager of the Delaware 87ers (now Delaware Blue Coats)  on August 28, 2017.

In 2000, Brand established a charitable foundation, namely Elton Brand Foundation. His foundation sponsors after-school education programs, children’s sports involvement, and single-parent households in Los Angeles.

Furthermore, Brand is a founder member and president of Gibraltar Films. It is a production company that invests in, acquires, produces, and distributes cinematic films.

Gibraltar Films’ first project was the movie Rescue Dawn, released in 2007. The movie was directed by Werner Herzog and is based on the survival story of a US pilot captivated in a Vietnam prison.

Elton also attended the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
