In July 2024, during the media interaction at Cleveland Clinic Courts following the 2024 NBA Summer League mini-camp, when Bates was asked about his body transformation, he disclosed his precise weight gain, saying he is actually feeling good now.

Though he recently became a professional athlete, he is not new to basketball. His basketball journey began when he was three years old. While he was a fourth-grade student, he had already played against high school seniors at a rec league.
After that, he consistently competed in the AAU team at a tournament in Chicago from the side of Toledo Wildcats and the under-15 division of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League.
Likewise, his basketball skills continuously improved after enrolling in Lincoln High. He set several records as a high schooler before making a college debut on November 9, 2021.
As a college player, he was named American Athletic Conference (AAC) Freshman of the Week and third-team All-MAC, and he eventually made it to the NBA.
