Estacado High School coach Tamarick Courtney was detained by officers after transporting his students in his own vehicle, while the school bus keys were reportedly not available.

Tamarick is an assistant coach on the Estacado High School boys basketball coaching staff for the 2025‑26 season, working under head coach Tony Wagner.

Recently, Tamarick was involved in an incident while trying to take the basketball team to Cooper Liberty High School for a game.

Following the failure of the school bus, Tamarick transported the athletes in his own vehicle, which led to him being stopped by an official.

While Lubbock ISD Asks Resignation for Estacado Coach Following Transportation Incident, Community Supports Him and Says He Did the Right Thing!

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Estacado High School was scheduled to take its athletes to a basketball game at Cooper Liberty High School.

However, the bus assigned to transport the students arrived without keys, leading Coach Tamarick Courtney to transport the students in his own vehicle.

Following this, Tamarick was stopped by an official, who cited him for speeding, which the coach claims he was not doing. In his recent posts, he stated:

I was not speeding with those kiddos in my vehicle I was pulled over because the officer said I didn’t make a complete stop at the stop sign entering the parking lot of Liberty High School and I do have insurance those insurance tickets are 8months old

However, despite the coach doing the right thing by helping the students participate in the game, he was asked to resign from his role or face termination by LISD Human Resources.

While the coach did nothing wrong and all students were safe, he declined to resign and is now moving forward with filing a grievance.

Additionally, he has noted that he has contacted the Lubbock Branch NAACP for assistance and is requesting a Level One Grievance hearing for the matter to be reconsidered

Following the incident, many parents and community members have expressed their support for the coach and said he did the right thing.

Many claim that no other coaches would have used their own vehicle to transport the students, and they praise the coach for standing by the students when the school failed to provide transportation.

As of now, Estacado High School has not made any announcement regarding the incident, but the community is seeking fairness, while Coach Tamarick has declined to resign for doing the right thing.
