A devastating accident on Houston’s South Loop early Saturday morning, January 10, 2026, claimed the lives of 18-year-old Omar “Omarsito” Paita, a recent Cesar Chavez High School graduate and local soccer standout, and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Luz Tovar.

According to police, the three young people, including Omar Paita, Luz Tovar, and Isaiah Xavier Benavidez, were riding in a pickup truck on the I-610 South Loop East near Roe Drive around 2 a.m. when the vehicle lost control.

Authorities reported that the truck struck a puddle, veered off the road, hit a directional sign support, and then erupted in flames.

Surveillance footage captured a passerby and others rushing to help, successfully pulling the driver, 18-year-old Isaiah Xavier Benavidez, from the burning vehicle.

Unfortunately, Omar Paita and Luz Tovar were unable to be rescued and died in the crash. No other vehicles were involved.

According to family members, Omar and his friends were at home playing games and hanging out on Friday night into Saturday when they decided to make a run to Buc-ee’s in Texas City.

Following the crash, Houston Police charged Isaiah Benavidez with intoxication manslaughter.

He remains hospitalized, and authorities are continuing their investigation.

Omar’s mother, Elizabeth ‘Edna’ Rodriguez, expressed mixed emotions regarding the charges, noting that her son’s friend was part of their extended family and that Omar would not have wanted him punished for an unintentional accident.

Late Omar Paita Jr. Was a Former Cesar E. Chavez High School Varsity Soccer Standout

Omar Paita, a proud member of the Class of 2025 from Houston, Texas, was a dedicated and talented athlete whose passion for soccer left a lasting mark on those around him.

As a defender for the Cesar E. Chavez High School varsity soccer team, Omar demonstrated exceptional skill, leadership, and sportsmanship on and off the field.

Throughout his senior year in 2024, Omar anchored the defense for the Chavez team, helping lead them to a respectable 10-9-4 overall record and a 6-4-3 mark in district play, finishing 4th.

His contributions were recognized not only within his school but also on a larger scale, with the team achieving a national ranking of #1292 and a state ranking of #331.

The untimely death of Omar Paita and his girlfriend, Luz Tovar, has left a profound void in the lives of their family, friends, and loved ones.

Many of their loved ones are sharing their memories on social media and extending their heartfelt condolences to their family during this difficult time.

Omar’s mother, Edna Rodriguez, described her son as “the light of the home” and “my rock.”

She said he was a prom king, a devoted older brother, and a constant support for both his parents and siblings.

Rodriguez also shared that Omar was always aware of the positive impact he had on others, recalling that he once told her:

“One day when I’m not around, the day I leave, you’re going to have an amazing support from friends, from family that you will never know.”

Friends and family describe Omar as a bright and caring young man who was deeply loved by those around him.

In the wake of the tragedy, Omar’s family has launched a GoFundMe to assist with funeral expenses and plans to honor his memory with a balloon release.

Friends, neighbors, and classmates continue to mourn the loss of Omar and Luz, remembering them as people who touched many lives with their warmth and generosity.

The family will soon provide details about the funeral and memorial services.
