The Essex, Maryland, mourns the untimely death of beloved resident and standout football player and coach, Howard Sye.
According to reports, Howard (Sunny) Sye, 31, was shot and killed by police on the night of December 3, 2025, in Essex, Baltimore County, during an encounter that began with a 911 call reporting a stabbing at an apartment on Holgate Drive.
Sye would have celebrated his 32nd birthday on December 10.
According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID), Baltimore County Police officers responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a dispute and a stabbing involving Sye and his sister.
Upon arrival, officers encountered Sye armed with a knife and gave verbal commands, and within seconds, multiple officers discharged their service weapons, striking him.
Officers rendered aid until EMS arrived, transporting Sye to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
A woman believed to be his sister was found inside the apartment with stab wounds and remains hospitalized.
One officer was also injured and received medical treatment. The IID identified the officers involved as Officer Malia Hooper and Officer Trent LaPosta, each with one year of service, along with Officer First Class Nicholas Vagnier and Officer Hunter Cortes, each with two years of service.
All four officers are assigned to the Operations Bureau and were equipped with body cameras that recorded the incident, with footage expected to be released within 20 business days per IID protocol.
Loved Ones of Howard Sye Seek Answers, Justice, and Accountability After Deadly Police Encounter
Sye’s family now seeks answers, saying the situation escalated too quickly and should have been handled differently given his mental health history.
His brother Tabias questioned why officers opened fire instead of de-escalating, stating that Sye struggled with trauma and mental health issues for years, and police had previously responded to their home.
He expressed frustration that Howard never received the help he needed and said the family expected assistance, not a fatal outcome.
Tabias remembered his brother as a father who adored his young daughter, a talented mechanic able to fix any car, and a hardworking man with exceptional physical strength.
He said Howard’s mental struggles stemmed from childhood family trauma and insisted that “there’s no way that man should be dead,” calling for accountability and a fair, independent investigation.
The IID has asked anyone with information or video related to the case to contact the division and confirmed that the officers involved are on routine administrative leave while investigations continue.
Community attention has grown around the case as advocates and family members call for transparency in how police handled the encounter with a mentally distressed individual.
The tragic incident now circulates widely under search interest surrounding Howard Sye’s shot, raising ongoing discussions about response tactics, mental health intervention, and police use of force in Maryland.
