Kaitlyn Chen’s boyfriend, Caden Shapiro, is the son of Mark Shapiro, the president and CEO of the Toronto Blue Jays.
After helping UConn to its 12th NCAA Championship in her lone season as a graduate transfer, point guard Kaitlyn Chen was selected No. 30 overall in the WNBA Draft by the Golden State Valkyries on Monday, April 14, 2025.
Chen wasn’t invited to the draft but was pulled out of the audience section where she was in attendance to support Huskies teammate and No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers.
She is the 49th WNBA pick in program history and joins a roster in Golden State that already includes UConn alum Tiffany Hayes. After being drafted, Chen said,
“It’s honestly still a little bit of shock. It’s all a little overwhelming,” “I was really just here to wait Paige get drafted, and I’m so happy for her, but it’s been an unreal night.”

Chen, 23, born on February 22, 2002, played as a point guard at UConn in 2024-25 behind the superstar trio Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and Sarah Strong, averaging 6.9 points and 3.4 assists, shooting a career-best 51.4% from the field in 23.4 minutes per game.

They made their relationship public in late July 2023 after Chen posted a photo of themselves having an enjoyable weekend. She captioned,

Caden Shapiro, 22, born on August 28, 2002, in Cleveland, Ohio, is a senior on the Princeton University baseball team and has been a key contributor throughout his collegiate career.
A 6-foot, 210-pound infielder from Toronto, Ontario, and a graduate of Upper Canada College, Caden has demonstrated his offensive production and academic excellence.
He started all 44 games, hitting six home runs and driving in 29 runs in the 2024 season.
Standout performances included a 5-for-5 outing against North Carolina and back-to-back home runs in the Ivy League Tournament.
In 2024, he earned Academic All-Ivy honors, adding to his 2023 accolades of Second Team All-Ivy and CSC Academic All-District recognition.
Before Princeton, he played for the Toronto Mets and was ranked among the top prospects in Ontario by Perfect Game.
Off the field, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of his school’s publication and won several academic awards.
