The town of Grenada, Mississippi, is mourning the sudden loss of Ayden Reno, a 16-year-old junior at Grenada High School who brought joy to everyone around him.
Ayden, a talented football player and member of the Vision show choir, was found dead late Monday night, leaving his family, friends, and community searching for answers and comfort.
His passing has left a huge gap that words can hardly describe, but the memories of his vibrant spirit are keeping Grenada together during this painful time.
Ayden was born to Kortney Jones and Xavier Jones and grew up with his two brothers in a loving home.
At 5’8″, he was a standout defensive back for the Grenada Chargers, proudly wearing the number 27 jersey.
On the field, he showed grit and promise, like when he made a key tackle in a 49-6 rout against Winona on September 6, 2024.
Off the field, Ayden’s talents shone just as brightly in the Vision show choir, where his energy and kindness lifted everyone around him.
As a member of the class of 2027, he had a future full of possibilities until it was tragically cut short.
On Monday, September 22, 2025, around 11:41 p.m., Grenada police officers responded to a call and found Ayden’s body in a brushy, overgrown area near a home by Honeytown Park in the 700 block of Leigh Avenue.
Earlier that evening, reports of shots fired had come from the same area, raising questions about what happened.
Deputies from the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office and MedStat Emergency Medical Services arrived quickly, but there was nothing they could do.
Grenada County Coroner Douglas “Little Bobby” Yates pronounced Ayden dead at 12:25 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23.
His body was sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy, and the results are still pending.
Police Chief George Douglas said the investigation is ongoing, and it’s not yet clear if the shots fired are connected to Ayden’s death or if he died from a gunshot wound.
“We’re doing everything we can to get answers,” Chief Douglas said, asking anyone with information to contact the Grenada Police Department, but for now, the community is left waiting and grieving.
The Next Morning, Grenada High School Felt the Weight of Ayden’s Absence
The school district extended first-block classes on Tuesday to give students and teachers time to process the loss.

Ayden’s friends and loved ones have flooded social media with tributes, each one showing how deeply he touched their lives.
Heather Procella, who knew him through school and show choir, wrote:
“Remember to always tell someone you care, because you never know when it will be the last time you see them. There are those that come in your life and make a difference and Holly Wood Reno was just that type of friend! Emma Pitcock has been friends with him since middle school, oh the memories and laughs they have shared. The lunch room bandits! How I miss those FaceTime videos asking what I’m going to cook him. I had the pleasure of having him on Visions crew with me, he was my ‘left hand’ man. He was one of my babies! The one who helped Emma stay calm backstage during a performance and helping her get her shoes laced quickly, and cheering everyone on! He made sure everyone was always taken care of. Had I known last week would be the last time I hugged him & told him I loved him, I would’ve held him a little longer. Please continue to pray for his family Kortney Jones Xavier Jones. Forever in our hearts.”

“My sweet, respectful boy! I treated him like my own at this school! He stayed in the hallway, and I was always there to tell him to go on to class now and not get into any trouble. ‘Yes, ma’am, I’m not!’ He kept me laughing and going. I literally just talked to you on FaceTime yesterday on my break. Who would’ve known that would’ve been the last time hearing your voice and seeing you? Soon after you saw me, you yelled, ‘What’s up, cuz,’ with that big smile. Ms. Kimble loves you forever and will definitely miss you, sweet boy! I’m so hurt by this one. Pray for our students, staff, and most definitely his family.”

Ayden Reno was more than a football player or a choir member; he was a friend who made people laugh, a teammate who gave his all, and a light in every room he entered.
As Grenada waits for answers, the love pouring out for Ayden shows just how much he meant to everyone.
