A post shared by Kourtney Hann on Facebook sparked discussion across local community groups after she reported seeing a suspicious man at the Outdoor Discovery Center in Holland.

According to her post, the incident happened while she was visiting the area with her children.

She described a shirtless man wearing sandals who appeared disoriented and was walking near the playground and trail areas.

Hann stated that she felt uncomfortable with the man’s behavior, saying he was looking around frequently and acting in a way she interpreted as erratic.

Concerned for her children’s safety, she said she kept them close and quickly left the area.

In her update, she emphasized that she did contact the police at the time of the incident after noticing what she believed to be suspicious activity.

The post grabbed attention online, drawing a wide range of reactions from community members.

Some praised her for being cautious and taking action, saying parents should always trust their instincts in public spaces.

As the post spread, the comment section turned into a broader debate about public safety, personal judgment, and the role of law enforcement in situations like this.

One user, Tia Carmichael, wrote that if the man was not a threat, police should simply check the situation and send him on his way, adding that reporting suspicious activity helps keep families safe.

You did all the right things. I am a bit shocked at the blowback on this — see something, say something. If the guy is “fine” the police officers will verify and send him on his way. No harm done. If he is not – they will keep the other families safe. Thank you for letting us know, Kourtney. I had a similar experience at Pine Bend (opening day of a new story walk and no one else was at the park) two summers ago – police were called and the guy was absolutely up to no good and known to the Ottawa County officers.

Chris Parish stated that a shirtless man acting strangely near a playground could reasonably raise concern for parents, even if no crime was confirmed.

People calling you a Karen are crazy. A shirtless dude with no kids around a playground is arguably sketch behavior. And if it turns out to be nothing, then cool. But you did the right thing getting your kids out of there and contacting the police to go check it out. Again yall a grown man walking around shirtless near a playground is suspect for sure.

Some commenters criticized the post, arguing that it could unfairly label the man without evidence of wrongdoing. Tim Woods warned that calling police in such situations can escalate encounters involving mental health issues.

Tia Carmichael that’s not how it works. Cops aren’t trained on mental health issues, most of which are completely harmless. Weaponizing 911 in this day because you’re uncomfortable is a good way to end an innocent person’s life. Do better

Tim Woods

Heather N. Gonda suggested that unusual behavior does not automatically mean someone is dangerous or under the influence.

It’s fine to be cautious to protect your kids, but it’s kind of awkward to assume the guy’s on drugs when there could be something else going on medically or mentally.

LongLive Ayo argued that “see something, say something” can sometimes lead to harmful assumptions about people who may be struggling with mental health or disabilities.

Another user, Tammy Escamilla, questioned whether the situation required police involvement at all, suggesting the man may have simply been walking the trails and minding his own business.

Wow so somebody a male is enjoying the trails that are not just for children without a shirt on, maybe out for a walk try to gather his thoughts and talking to himself you and your kids come along to where he already was and he looks your way for what you consider is too long and you sic the police on him? Well I’m glad I wasn’t for a walk at the Discovery Zone today or I might be talking to police too if you’re that scared to be observed out in public stay inside. Why don’t you just leave him alone and MYOB

Tammy Escamilla

Hann responded in the comments, defending her actions, stating that her priority was getting her children away from the situation.

She also clarified that she did call the police and expressed hope that if the man needed help, he would receive it.

In another comment, she added that she believed the man’s behavior was not appropriate for a children’s park, which further fueled discussion among users.
